While Shinji was having a psychodrama, Nerv was being attacked and the world was coming to an end due to weird alien and conspiracy stuff hitting the fan.

Shinji, because he was in the Eva when the human instrumentality ritual started, became a god-like being and was given the choice of what to do with all life on Earth.

He initially chose to dissolve it all into LCL and meld all human souls into one, in order to escape the pain of existing along side other humans. But then, after realizing that there might be something worthwhile to this "individual human existence in the real world" thing, he went back on it. He also gave everyone the option of regaining their physical form, and getting out of the LCL, if they have the will to live.

In the meantime, Yui, because her soul was in the Eva and she has taken the lance of longinus for herself, leaves earth and her son forever, headed for deep-space in the Eva as a god and "An eternal reminder that mankind existed".

Evangelion is a phenomenal show, and it's themes are absolutely amazing. However, I couldn't shake the feeling that it was a bit overrated when I watched it. It's an amazing show, don't get me wrong, but I feel if it is put against competitors like Code Geass it wouldn't hold up as well. So that got me thinking if other people think it's a bit overrated to still hold Evangelion on the pedestal it is held in the anime community. Because some parts of it just seemed unnecessarily dark and gritty for atmospheric reasons rather than plot progression.

I think most people put Evangelion on a pedestal because it starts Power Rangers and goes completely batshit, but it was clever enough to hint that it would do such at the start

EVA+EoE is the best anime of all time, and among the greatest works of television and film.

After Gainax ran out of money during Ep.23's production Anno literally stood at the top of the building that housed the studio and flipped a coin to decide whether or not he should jump off and die. He also convinced some of the voice actors to choke each other during recording sessions of End of Evangelion. Watched it at 18. Reaction was the generic dude so trippy + asuka is my waifu, Reis is an emotionless doll, I don't really hate shinji as much as people do.
Watched it the second time at 28 last year and the reaction was that it's a fucking amazing and really appreciated all of the cast and their interactions. I somehow managed to sympathize and even empathize with the characters despite some of them being 14 because some of the shit in there can be relatively age-independent.
It's really kind of hard to appreciate a character with daddy issues like Misato, or someone with self-loathing, or completely illogical devotion followed by betrayal like Ritsuko unless you've somehow dealt with this in your life and I don't think most 15 year olds have the experience. At most they would latch onto one character that they can really identify with, which is probably Shinji or Asuka in most cases, and trip balls at the 'woah so deep and symbolic' aspects of the series.

I can see it now, and asukas monologue while fighting in the movie makes a lot more sense, or when shinji melts into the eva and sees his mother, but I guess I always thought of these instances as counterparts to bad flashbacks (like shinji being abandoned)
