It's not that difficult to understand. If you stop thinking about time working in a linear fashion, it makes perfect sense.

PATHS are atemporal, when possessing a titan you are influenced by all past and future holders of that titan, however the strongest connection is with the last holder. I can go futher and say that this influence begin even before you hold a titan, as for eren "crying whilr sleeping" at the very begging of the series is probably related with the ending. Basically through the PATHS every eldian who ever existed and will exist are connected and exist at the same time at the PATHS. It also mean that theres no real destiny for the eldians as all their history is pre-determinated since the very begging through the PATHS. So instead of mass castration or collective suicide, is very likely that eren and historia intentions are to free the eldians of the PATHS that pre-determined them to repeat the same errors again and again so that they can build their own future and finally attain the so seek freedom eren can't shut the mount about.
