Eva wasn’t my first anime but during that time people had either watched it on Cartoon Network or had some DVDs. I got into it because of nearly everyone in my friend group passing the DVDs around to watch and discuss together, which was a lot of fun.

Why did Netflix censored Kaworu "I love you?" I mean, what are their motives behind it? Netflix is known for gay shit and being SJW, so why this time they decided to do the opposite? I need to know, it's driving me crazy, whats their endgame? Is it to highlight the scene, make people talk about it, make people research it, in a kind of sick twisted "see bigots there was gay shi in the 90's stop being prejudice"? Translation wasn't handled by Netflix and the translator who worked on this sub made them closer to the Japanese so it was more of a transliteration than a translation.
Apparently it's more accurate, but the way it was translated creates very awkward phrasing in English.

From what Ive been seeing its because Khara came down harder on the Netflix localization because they weren't particularly fond of the liberties taken in Funimation's initial 3.0 script. They went for a more literal translation despite the "suki" being more ambiguous in terms of translation. I dunno how true this is, but its just stuff I'd seen in a number of places so far.

Here is the translation from sephirotic of that lines. I have never heard anyone complain about it.
"regards" is hardly more gay than "grace".

Localization its something I theorized about, hence 4kids shenanigans. But still, Netflix have too much money to give a shit, I still think the motives were obscure I just can't seem to put my finger on it.

Or rather they weren't fond of the crowd reaction from the script. The initial translation screened at cons apparently overplayed a great deal of the Kaw/Shin to almost comical levels which resulted in the audience laughing and whatnot. Khara wasnt wild about that reaction and figured that Funi fucked the tone with a dopey translation and had them redo it, thats why the US BD release was delayed for 3.33. I'd seen some mentions about how how Khara got full rights to Eva from Gainax after 3.0 came out and that Anno may have had more input himself as a result. This is all just from various forum posts and tweets so take this with a grain of salt. Personally, script aside, the voice direct and casting was still lacking in a lot of ways.

The official time is sometime 2020.

I saw the original 3.0 translation in theaters, and I can’t say Khara’s misgivings are entirely unfounded. That being said, the new translation is pretty fucking bad.
