This shot is one that always gives me a slight chill. It isn't much on its own, but with the context of the scene, I find the expression to be intimidating.

Asuka has been falling apart and is throwing a tantrum in the bathroom, screaming about how she hates everyone and herself, while everyone in the apartment can clearly hear her. Misato usually acts jolly around the kids, but the audience knows that she wouldn't hesitate to do whatever is necessary to succeed. Misato's expression here is one of grim determination, devoid of cheer. She knows the situation has reached a breaking point, and that Asuka is on the chopping block. The audience knows some bad shit is going to go down soon, and I think that realization for me is crystallized by this shot.

That's why the scene is so brutal. The audience is supposed to be attached to Asuka and wants her to recover or be helped, but she's instead abandoned to her spiraling. It also shows that despite Misato's efforts to be a good "mommy" to the team, she can't hack it as a supportive figure and has decided to cut her losses on Asuka. It's a "get real" moment in the show, coming hot on the heels of others as the show continues to intensify toward the conclusion.

A lot of people seem to miss this quick shot from ep. 1, when Shinji hands Misato the summons Gendo sent him. Good visual storytelling with the implication that Shinji's initial reaction was to tear up the paper, but then took the effort to tape it back up.

This isn't all that great of a shot, but I still like it. From when Shinji is being let out of the hospital after his first Angel battle. I think what's most frustrating about Reifags for Anno is that he made Rei to represent what every socially inept anime watcher would want, just some quiet, submissive girl of nothingness with no real features. So then when people say "omg I want to make Rei my waifu!!!" not only are they absolutely not getting what Anno's point is, but they're exactly what he's trying to "Criticize". She's really not human, at all, either genetically or mentally. She's this weird amalgamation of a blank slate that ends up caring for only the protagonist. In other words, a fake person. It's absolutely not anything that happens in a real human life. The whole big theme of Evangelion is actually facing life as it is. Because it's hard and it sucks but you can't run away. Asuka represents this theme the best for Shinji. She's harsh, has flaws, can be difficult, but she's a real person while Rei represents an idealization of a woman. Just as Instrumentality is accepting this "fake dream world" where everyone stands around you and tells you how proud they are of you and everything is great, rejecting it leaves Shinji in this desolate wasteland, but you have to reject it. It's the only way to actually face life and move forward. You have to pick Asuka. Rebuild also follows this, as by picking Rei, Shinji does not move or evolve, attempting to run back where it's safe (back to mother, basically) rather than facing the consequences of his action.

Yeah that's kind of the point. Misato can't relate to other people in a deep way so she substitutes sex for it, which comes crashing down for her when she tries to "comfort" Shinji the only way she knows how (because she was actually looking to escape from her own loneliness any way she could).

Rei is super fucking flawed. She can barely feel emotion, just goes along with anything anyone tells her to do, she's not "quiet", shes nothingness. She doesn't stay silent because she's shy or anything, she stays quiet because she doesn't have anything to say. No opinions to weigh in, nothing. She's just (literally and figuratively) a two dimensional character. It's not "Rei Vs. Asuka". Her character development is just vaguely appreciating the protagonist. She's like a caricature of the "shy" anime trophy waifu trope, so grossly exaggerated.

It's tempting because- like instrumentality, choosing her just means an existence where everything is A-OK and everyone appreciates you and no one says bad things and bad things never happen. But this isn't a real life. This isn't a life a person could possibly have. It's artificial, it's created. You have to reject it because it's hard, not because it's easy.

And that's what Asuka represents. She represents confronting your problems and actually tackling them. She represents living in the real world instead of some fantasy world. She's not going to tell you comfortable lies, she's going to tell you the harsh truth so you can fix yourself.

You can still like Rei for the "flavor" she adds in NGE as a foil to Asuka. You can even like her characterization more than Asuka, it doesn't matter. You're not supposed to ultimately fall in love with her like shes the "perfect girl" like so much of the NGE audience has done. Nothing insulting about it.

I've never actually really felt like I understood this sequence from ep 4, when Shinji is suddenly overwhelmed by a rising cacophony from the city around him. He covers his ears and sprints away.

On the other hand, the camera focuses on a street light right after this and it goes out when he exits the frame. Lights (and their relation to keeping away the darkness and protecting man) are used a lot in the show.

I really like how Misato is wearing her her uniform in this scene, it really highlights the issues Misato is facing as both Shinji's commanding officer and his guardian. In the end the tension between the two roles makes her fail at both of them.

Music rights are broken up into two different kinds of rights - "composition" rights the cover the lyrics, notes, and composition, and "performance" rights that cover the actual performance of the song. If you're producing a tv show or movie uou can use your own version of a song by buying only the composition rights and recording a new performance, but if you want to use an old performance you need both the performance rights and the underlying composition rights.

Likely what happened is that Netflix was unable to get the composition rights for Fly Me To The Moon. Idk who owns the rights (probably Sinatra's estate). Maybe they thought they could pump Netflix for more $$$$

An armless Unit-02 decides to attack the Angel in ep 19 using Skull Bash. Unfortunately, Asuka forgot that move has to charge for one turn first, and the attack is a failure.

It's an interesting scene. He has Shinji's pilot record files deleted when he departs, so it seems like Shinji is not a relevant part of Gendo's plans once he has verified that the dummy system can control Unit-01. To be sure, he confesses to the personal weaknesses you cite in EoE.

They probably just wanted to use her as a distraction until they could get Unit-01 to the scene.

I think they have strong basal regeneration from being directly derived from Lilith/Adam. But they also mention using "spare parts" many times, I believe in a biological-component context. I think there are many spare "bodies" around that they fuse parts from. I could be wrong.

So they just kinda "weld" together parts from the eva graveyard with the damaged evas? I figured that Adam and Lilith have some pretty strong regenerative abilities, but unit 02 is not related to Lilith, and Adam-based lifeforms seem to need an S2 engine to get really ridiculous regeneration.

I always thought it to be weird that the Angel's "mask" was rigid enough to throw sparks as Unit 01 held it to the steel beam in the elevator, but it was also rubber-like enough to stretch when Unit 01 was about to give it the coup de grace.

I think not necessarily from the graveyard. Like the simulation bodies they used in ep 13, I think they have "soulless" but physically complete Evas being made all the time for organ / limb harvesting. On the other hand, they clearly have some intrinsic ability to regenerate - in ep 2, Unit-01 is shown regenerating its arm (and armor) after it goes berserk.

So Evas are incredibly resilient but there is a cap on it, they were cloned from something already goddamn old and inherited its used telomeres while also lacking the S2 organ by default, the key feature that Angels are entirely sustained by for their entire lives.

This flashed shot shows that she did in fact want Shinji but didn't know how to handle the situation. For fun, note that in the story of the battle of Jericho, the wall did come down. (By trumpeting, but I guess trumpets are basically cellos).
