Primetime anime were mostly family friendly (family friendly doesn't mean for children) but still pushed the envelope of what could be shown in that time slot. Eva might have pushed it over the edge to getting late night anime as a thing (how true this is I don't know, but it's what I commonly hear) but Eva is nowhere near the only primetime anime that had objectionable content in it.

to be fair, you had to have a very high IQ to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion.

And that is the correct watch Eva. Like almost anime they put imagery over narrative.

Eva is literally one of the most praised anime ever. People everywhere talk about it all the time (pretty sure there's almost daily threads on Yea Forums for instance). And it aired (partially) on Toonami and then on Adult Swim. Any feeling of it having anything to do with any "sekrit klub" is probably because it hasn't had an official US release in over a decade. But even then it wasn't like people weren't talking about it during that time.

The story is fairly straightforward. What makes things convoluted is how the lore is delivered. Unless Anno's plan the whole time was to make a meta story where key information for NGE and EoE are presented in a fighting game and trading cards, then he's just a scatterbrained producer.

The "lore" of Evangelion is irrelevant for the story of what Anno wanted to talk: the sentimient of loneliness and inadecuancy of Shinji.
