They're tolerable, but you need to understand that you need to dramatically change your perspective while viewing it. Whereas Try was full of world-building and got surprisingly dark for what Slayers is, you need to take a much more subdued approach to Revo / Evo-R.

Revo / Evo-R shines when it's not focusing on the main plot. Evo-R specifically has the best filler episodes across the anime... But it's very telling when you promote FILLER EPISODES instead of the main ones that develop the full plot.

I will say that you can tell the writers' hearts were in the right place, because there's a lot of service towards light novel readers.

Seigram first serves Greater Beast, then gets inducted to Garv's team thanks to the priest Raltaak, who has disguised himself as the butler for Radok Ranzaad, who is the disguise for the assassin Zuuma who, after losing both of his arms when attacking Lina and Gourry in Saillune, fuses with Seigram to get his arms back and enhance his powers.

I thought it was a good way to introduce a minor villain without disposing him immediately.

Yup. She would've seen a copy of the Claire Bible while still living with her family in Zephilia, so she was by-definition a pre-teen who learned how to channel God. I don't think people who waifu Lina realize just how potent her force-of-will is; she'd steamroll a regular guy in a relationship.

Astral spells don't kill humans, they attack them astrally where their only presence is their mind. A powerful Astral spell would render a human unconscious, but it wouldn't kill them, as far as I am aware.

I love Slayers and will admit the anime is far from perfect, but it certainly does a lot right and capitalizes on its strong points. The gag-writing and the songs are top-shelf, and while the animation is lackluster or, in the case of the first season, non-existent, there's nothing offenseive about it.

That comes from a Kanzaka interview but never appears in the story text. It's contradicted by how Rui draws the relative character heights for the illustration (which Kanzaka has to approve). Kanzaka treats those interviews pretty whimsically so I would take those heights with a grain of salt.

It's funny you should say that, since his first job was working in an office, though by his own admission he found it boring and considered himself a poor worker, until he got his break with Dragon Magazine.

Why would you kneecap the anime by making it tie more-closely with the LNs? If anything, Revo / Evo-R, which adapts Volumes 5 and 6, shows that the anime should try its own thing instead of copying. Change their designs to their new Atessa outfits, sure, but don't make it an imitation.

Try was its own story, which accomplished a very large amount of world-building for people ignorant of the light novels. For example, it helped explain that there are other worlds, that there are counterparts to Ceipheed (Night Dragon Vorpheed) and Shabranigdo (Dark Star Dugradigdu), explained the origin of the Sword of Light and got rid of it like how it was lost in Volume 8, and also had more room to expand on relationships since the anime was more fan-focused than what a supervisor selling books cared about.

Unfortunately yes, Zolf and Rodimus are confirmed dead. Dilgear's troll-mix let him recover from his ass-kicking, but without finances he ended up starved and delirious while wandering the roads until Luna found and forcefully adopted him.

The lore presented in TRY that you listed is what got me to really sink my teeth into things outside just the anime, so it definitely worked on that level. I found the other worlds and the darkstar weapons in particular fascinating. I assume the Mazoku Barrier (which to my knowledge had never been mentioned in Slayers or NEXT) is also a LN import.

It's correct, but it's also a major part of the canon. The anime in the first season partially explains this.

During the Great Koma War, Hellmaster Phibrizo was trying to reawaken a fragment of Ruby-Eye Shabrangido. Using the largest demonic invasion the world had ever seen, Hellmaster waged war on humans, elves, and dragons. The fighting was so serious almost every spellcaster around the world came to the North to fight. One potent spellcaster, the man who created not only the Dragon Slave but also constructed the Demon's Blood Talismans, was Lei Magnus, whose heart grew dark from the war, and it unleashed the fragment of Shabranigdo inside of him.

During this conflict, Aqualord Regradia managed to imprison Lei Magnus, now dubbed "Demon King of the North" in ice, while also destroying and forcing Chaos Dragon Garv to reincarnate in human bodies until he was purified. This came at the cost of her life, and she sank into the sea.

Hellmaster, unopposed, was able to construct the Mazoku Barrier over the continent, trapping essentially every spellcaster in the world there. With no way to get out, magic became a lost art outside of the Barrier, and with no way to get in, along with the death of the Aqualord, Holy Magic was lost to humans as well.

With Hellmaster's death, the Barrier was dropped, which motivates the anime going east to Firelord's domain and the manga going west to Airlord's territory.

Even if Try was anime original, Kanzaka was still series composer for that season (and on Next) and supervised the scripts. So the lore introduced that season was also his creation.
It always bugged me when Western fans overlooked that and called the plot arcs in Try "fanfiction".

To be fair, the West was largely locked-out of a large portion of content for years until the internet made translation and communication much easier. It's why silly lies like "Luna and Greater Beast are friends" or "Zelgadis is part-mazoku" spread.

What's important now is that if anyone is getting back into Slayers, but still has misconceptions, then they should be politely corrected and shown the source of their error, if possible. No hostilities, just a bunch of friends.

I guess I'm one of those western fans who was misled about a lot of things. The only way I could experience the series as a kid was every month going to the mall (a physical shopping mall) and buying the latest 2 or 3 VHS tapes they'd managed to put out. Dub of course - there wasn't any other option. The dub itself does a very poor job of getting across some of important lore sometimes, even though I appreciate how hard the people working on it clearly tried.

For a long time that was all I knew about Slayers, it was the only way I could experience it. I still have my VHS tapes of most of it, all the way through TRY. I watched it together with my sister and she had a crush on Zelgadis

How do you convince fans to take on a "grounded" story when AoT, MHA, and DBS are super-popular?

Zel is unironically the fan favorite among women. Some like Gourry, some like Xellos, but Zel is prime real estate.

They start off rough. Volume 1 threatened to jump the shark because it introduces the strongest antagonist right off the bat, and Volume 2 is rather slow. Volume 3 is decent, and it's after this point Hajime really gets his feet off the ground.

Once Volume 8 ended, I started getting burned out because Volume 9 was slow, but once Volume 11 (I think) hit I couldn't put it down, and Volumes 14 and 15 were fantastic.

I like Give A Reason because of that sick bass line, and is good because of that guitar work. Despite being "bad" in terms of story, both Revo / Evo-R had great ending songs.

Out of all the Slayers songs across all mediums my favorite is still Midnight Blue from Slayers Perfect because of how wistful it makes the listener, and if the entirety of the work was as good as the opening piece, In the Limitless Desires from Slayers Special.

One-seventh of Shabranigdo and one of his subordinates killed stalemated and killed one-fourth of Ceipheed. Shabranigdo's fragments are absurdly powerful, which is why the story has to go out of its way to explain how Lina can handle a fragment.

It's why the final fight in Evo-R was received so poorly, ESPECIALLY with its reasoning.

There is another one we know about, but if you haven't read the light novels, it's a gigantic spoiler, especially if you're not paying attention to the details. Also, don't believe the rumors saying that Lina has a fragment inside of her.

I'm of the opinion that Slayers has the single best magic system in any fiction. Pool and Bucket capacity is such a simple and perfect concept, along with the various types and how/where they draw power.

Keep in mind that defeating just one fragment required using a spell that's so dangerous it could literally destroy the world itself if the caster messes it up. Lina also needed the power of the Sword of Light or the Demon Blood Talismans just to cast it. So she was also incredibly lucky.

Personally I like it because, as a high-ranking mazoku, he has the ability to have whatever grotesque, disturbing, monstrous form he wants, and instead chooses to be something efficient and practical. He is the epitome of "no fucks given".

Two treasure-hunters, Luke and Milina, end up crossing paths with Lina and Gourry while they try to find Gourry a new weapon after the Sword of Light is lost. Originally antagonistic towards each other, they eventually start working together whenever their paths cross.

Luke is described as having "evil eyes" and has a unique spell called Ruby Eye Blade. However, despite all of this, he's shown to be deeply infatuated with Milina, doing anything and everything to try and impress her and following her around like a dog. Milina, meanwhile, is cold and sometimes hostile towards Luke's advances.

In Volume 14, due to a major religious spat going on in the city of Sellentia where priests are competing for the chance to become the High Priest, and threatening each others' lives over it, Milina gets injured and severely poisoned. Since she can't heal herself and Lina doesn't know Resurrection, Luke rushes her to the nearest priest, who refuses their service because he's working for a competing priest. When he brings her to the priest that he'd been hired to bodyguard, the party learns no one on his staff knows Resurrection, and Milina dies.

Filled with nothing but pure, cold hate, Luke starts systematically killing all of the priests in Sellentia, and then forces Lina and Gourry to confront him in the ruins of Sairaag.

I've been aware of this series for years back when I was starting to get into anime. this is just one of the show's I have not yet watched. Like trigun, escaflowne, evangelion. Slayers looks like the most fun, and I love the look of their clothes. Should I give it a chance?

If you're just interested in the anime, that's perfectly acceptable. However, if you want to get the full breadth of Lina's adventures in animation, use this as a guide.

Start with the OVAs, then the movies on the right side of the chart, then move on down the middle. Lost Universe is optional; while it's connected loosely to the anime, the Lost Universe and Slayers light novels are unrelated, so it's not necessarily important. Not to mention the Lost Universe anime is pretty bad, since they had to redo half a season in six months because of a studio fire, and it ends on a cliffhanger.

To better clarify, Slayers SFC is a sprite-based, turn-based classic JRPG that not only has the main story, but a bonus story after completing the main game where you get to fight Shabranigdo as a super-boss. You can have up to four party members at a time, including the main characters and some side characters introduces in the light novels.

It also has one of the best plot twists in the entire franchise.

So how does Darkstar compare to Shabranigdo anyway; are they relatively equal in power. Also, if the weapons of light are basically Darkstar's equivalent to Shabranigdo's subordinates ; shouldn't they be able to kill or at least severely harm hellmaster and his siblings. I ask this because Gourry could not do shit against Gaav with the sword of light.

It's impossible to measure if they're truly equal, but they are on the same level of hierarchy when it comes to Mazoku. For most purposes you can consider them equal counterparts.

As for the weapons of light, Gourry wasn't able to do shit with it because he barely understands what it is he's using. They're meant as magical conduits, not just raw weapons. This is why something like Galveyra being fired spells charging it up is way more powerful than Gourry just swinging around Gorunnova. For a good look at what the sword of light COULD do, see when Gourry was being used a puppet by Phibrizzo. He was throwing Kamehamehas out of the fucking thing.

Dark Star and Ruby-Eye are equivalent in power, and yes, the Weapons of Light are Dark Star's subordinates. The issue with Gourry failing to harm with the Sword of Light is that, despite being in human form, Garv still has all of his mazoku power. His physical and astral sides are both very close to each other, meaning that he can't be significantly harmed by either physical or astral attacks, which the Sword of Light uses.

1) Zanaffar, according to Xellos, can be easily slaughtered by mazoku subordinates or their retainers. It's an enemy to mortals because it's shut-off from the Astral Plane, meaning Astral Shamanism and Black Magic are ineffective against it. Elemental Shaminism, by contrast, can touch the creature, but it does nothing to its impervious hide.

2) Xellos is the strongest subordinate retainer. We can't measure Xellos in terms of percentages in relation to Greater Beast because they operate on scales, but we can measure him according to other retainers:
Raltaak and Rashaart (Garv) and Huraker and Riksfalto (Dolphin) are each half as strong as Xellos;
Grau, Dee, Sherra, and Norst (Dynast) are a quarter of Xellos' power;
Hellmaster's retainers, who were killed in the Great Koma War, were all one-eighth of Xellos' strength.

The only mortal equivalent we know of by Word of God that can fight Xellos on equal footing with going up a power scale is Luna, because she is a Knight of Ceipheed.

All I can say about Xellos is that while most Mao/Lords create a priest and a general to split their power among, Greater Beast instead just made Xellos. So he's like double-strong.

Something I find interesting is that mazoku can only reproduce by splitting their power and thereby reducing themselves, so they're fated to a kind of doom. It makes sense why they have the motivations they do, when you consider that. They're the antithesis of normal life that wants to spread.

I also think it's hilarious that even the most high-ranking mazoku mistakenly think the Lord of Nightmares is a mazoku also.

It's not necessarily "fated" for them to die, because they become more-powerful on human fear and anger. It's the reason why shinzoku and mazoku perpetually end in stalemates; shinzoku can heal themselves, but the suffering fighting mazoku causes them allows their enemies to stay strong. In a similar vein, humanity can't go to war with mazoku despite being able to breed like rabbits for the same reason.

Also, to be fair, they consider L-sama to be a mazoku because it's very clear that her desire is to bring everything back into her in the Sea of Chaos, which aligns with the mazoku philosophy. In Try, Almayce is eager to see Lina's Giga Slave fire off because it feels like it brings him closer to "their mother".

I really liked Almayce more than others because, out of everyone on the shinzoku side with exceptional power, he was the only one not willing to compromise his beliefs in order to save both his world and Lina's. Whether it's the High Dragon Priest's actions in the past or Erulogos, Almayce believed in saving as many people as possible. He's a cool dude.

Not remakes, but they're releasing BDs of the anime recently. NEXT will be released in three days as another user pointed out, but if it's the same quality as the S1 BD, it won't be worth the price.

As for Lodoss War, it is another sword and sorcery setting, but it's got a serious tone. Unlike other fantasy stories popularly released at the time like it, Berserk, or Claymore, Slayers' first focus was comedy, which makes it, and the dark moments, really stand out.

The problem with Astral Shamanism is that it attacks the spirit, meaning that it seems largely non-damaging compared to a Dragon Slave, and furthermore it only affects a single area as opposed to having an enormous radius. We don't see it being effective because it can be used more-often solely because it's not physically damaging, and that means we see it fail more than Dragon Slave, and while Astral Shamanism is devastating to most mazoku, high-ranking ones have a sort of spell-immunity.

The Slayers Encyclopedia describes it in detail.

One of my favorite anecdotes for Try is that Hajime was being shown pieces of art to get his opinion on them, to make sure they were decent for the show. Pic related was one of them, and when he asked the staff about it, they said the character designer, Naomi Miyata, really wanted the chance to see Garv is a sailor suit.

Hajime relented for her.

No real reason. The series has just been going on for so long and I'd like to see Lina's friends all finally come face to face properly. Plus I got into the series through the Naga stuff and was actually really bummed she was never in the series proper.

That would explain things, then. One of the pieces of information that isn't really extrapolated in the anime is that Garv is technically a good guy, and his motivations reflect strongly on other characters.

Garv, needing more humans to be powerful enough to confront the Demon King of the North, Lei-Shabranigdo, tried using Seigram to recruit Lina, who refused the offer. Seigram then attacks her and her party, loses, and then fuses with Zuuma with the prerogative of recruiting the assassin and defeating Lina. It's because Seigram picks a fight with Lina, rather than leaving her alone, that leads to her getting to the Claire Bible in the Kataart Mountains.

Of course, this is covered over several volumes, all of which is lost in the anime beyond his first appearance requesting Lina make a Pledge of Immortality with him, and then suddenly appearing in the Temple of Sand with Garv having less-gray morality because his motivations and who he is aren't explained yet.

Furthermore, Xellos, in disguise, attacked Lina in her sleep and set an entire city on fire, making her believe that it was Garv's retainers, Raltaak and Rashaart, who were killing innocents. Since she let Xellos guide her to the Bible, and Xellos was working for Hellmaster, and Lina rejected Seigram's offer, AND Lina's party has bad history with his retainers by fighting them, Garv believed she was an enemy and didn't want to help destroy Shabranigdo, and attacked her. All of those details and built-up momentum doesn't happen in the anime, either.

The Japanese fanart scene has been active all along. The doujins have dried up in the past couple years though. Hopefully they'll start being a little more active with the petit only event being held next month.

It’s only a matter of time. Once the new volume comes out, defies all expectations and causes an anime to be greenlitted few years later then western interest will spark since anime is more accessible. Only downside that it might attract cancer but I’ll take what I get.

For now though, I will enjoy every fucking moment of this doom cuz Slayers was the absolute shit.

My perspective is that even if a bunch of hack weebs crawl out of the woodwork pretending to love Slayers, there are so many hidden circles they can't be infiltrated. Yea Forums is one, but there are multiple groups from long-dead forums that haven't succumbed to congregating on mainstream social media, either. Slayers can't be ruined by the West in any way, shape, or form.

I probably shouldn't say this, but I've posted Slayers So Sweet 1 and 2 uncensored here before. Granted, it was JUST when Series 3 got an official announcement and threads were dead, but it's still worth an attempt. It is better to do and ask for forgiveness, than to do nothing.

It's just a little inconvenient if it happens in the middle of the storytime and half of my posts disappear. Heh. Maybe I'll still try it one of these days. I don't have that one then, I don't collect J. Sairo's because I mostly focus on the female-oriented circles that have more plot-focused stories. I have one that's Nyara-nyara hotpot-themed but I forgot if it was more to the gag side or more romantic.

I forgot to say, I was confusing that with the dragon cuisine one in my memory since both are food-themed.

No new anime because Revo / Evo-R was critically panned, as far as I am aware. It didn't try to tread new ground like what Try did since it fell back on adapting the light novels, and it really shows with how hamfisted the plot is.

The last Slayers thread to hit bump-limit was on February 12, 2013, which would've been around the time the 25th anniversary was up and rolling. I guess popularity really does only come in waves, huh? Browsing through it, there's a large amount of misinformation because the light novels hadn't finished being fan-translated yet, not to mention a massive lack of access to a surprising amount of auxiliary content like the manga. It's amazing how much a fandom can progress in six years...

Regardless, even if this doesn't hit 500, it was a good thread. Maybe the Slayers were the friends we made along the way...?
