God I hope not. The director, although a bit overboard in his preference for Chiho, did an excellent job with the anime overall, even in his handling of Emilia. Outside of the attack when she was caught on the stairs, she was great from a character standpoint.

The ED for the anime's pretty interesting. Chiho is always alone, and while she looks happy in all the still shots, there are two scenes where she's moving: one where her face is not visible, and one where she's visibly distraught and crying. That, along with the constant clock imagery (which suggests urgency) and the final shot where she's standing at a shopping window with all the other characters being featured as mannequins in costumes, can hint that the story isn't "real" in universe as well. Maybe it's Chiho's fantasy or delusion. It'd explain the light-hardheartedness of the story and how Chiho is always present for all the major events despite being useless. It's interesting to think about but it's probably all nonsense.

Is there a manga? I refuse to put myself through LN prose. I fell for the "i-it's actually well-written for LN (or WN in one case)" thing twice and I'm not doing it again. I do hope the character development is better in the LN because the anime didn't do a good job of selling Maou's redemption. I like the idea in general but for the author to do this without some significant development would leave a bad taste in my mouth.
