What? She's super relevant in NGE. She is literally the second most developed character in the show. She's not as 'important' to the plot points but Eva was always more about the characters and their development and struggles rather than sperging out about NERV and the Dead Sea Scrolls,

I don't feel Rei gets more screentime. She rejects Gendo, appears as the silent giant naked Lilith, is part of the train sequence where Asuka is more prominent, and then her main big scene is just when Shinji exits instrumentality. Its about equal with Asuka who has her battle, the pre-instrumentality role with Shinji, and the final scene.

Misato is the one without much, she gets Shinji to 01, and then basically falls off almost entirely.

Anno and Gainax already did that over 20 years ago.

Shipperfags, merchandise exploitation, and Rebuild misdirection shrouds it, but it's been there and will continue to be there.

I mean really that's more than obvious to anyone who actually watched the series. Shinji and Asuka are by far the two characters with the most development, and their relationship is highlighted throughout, right up to the final scenes of EoE being the two of them interacting.

I'm not even an Asukafag, it's just a plain fact that their relationship is central to the whole show and its themes.

I liked Rei best when I first saw the series, but as an adult it's clear to me that Misato is bestgirl by miles. Asuka is still the most thematically relevant girl.

I'm more interested in whomst the fuck at Gainax was reading 1960s english language scifi novels. There are Crichton and Clarke references in there, too, but those had movies. Shit like this and Wrinkle in Time didn't have any adaptations or translations to japanese.

She isn't as developed regardless, her character generally remains static beyond the shift around Kaji's death where she drops her "at home" personality to be all workaholic.

asuka's development isn't much different. she just goes from being an arrogant bitch to being a broken person. rei is kind of the opposite. while misato and asuka change somewhat suddenly, rei has a more gradual development but then a sudden event changes her back. though i guess you could argue it's not really the same rei anymore.

She's developed plenty from the first impression of her. From there she has the inordinate attachment to Shinji, the reveal her personal life is a shamble, reveals about her background and how she got to be like that, and she starts talking about what she thinks her motivations are while contradicting them in what she chooses to act on. She goes from disarmingly silly nee-san to viciously self-hating altruist.
