Specifically why I never got the hardon for the show. EoE is incredible, but the television show has a lot of problems. One can feel the lack of focus and foresight. The lackluster animation is a problem, too, because for some reason all people remember are the sequences animated by Mitsuo Iso and the overhead kick that was reused like 2 times. I also always got the impression that people who liked the characters never truly got the show. It was my impression that Anno intended for you to hate the entire cast, which is why all the characters (every single one) are obnoxious pieces of shit. Sound directing wasn't anything special, either and while the visual directing elevates certain episodes to pretty impressive levels, they are complete outliers.

It was revolutionary during its time and EoE overshadows the whole thing and allows people to forget its flaws. It's still a great watch.

Didn't Eva have an above average budget for a TV anime? Why did they have so much trouble evenly distributing it? Some shots have god-tier animation but a large portion of it is basically stills like the OP says.

From what I remember it was the opposite. Only had like 100k per episode or something. Thought my memory is pretty cloudy on that subject.

You should watch some media that has actually horrible characters, like The Marriage of Maria Braun. The characters in UC Gundam do worse things but nobody ever berates them for it.

The plot in Eva doesn't play the main role, it's a decoration. NGE is like a poem. It contains imagery that you either like or don't like.

And the tone is messy too the first couple of episodes have this background feeling of loneliness, but then ep. 5 to about 16 just feel too happy, too standard. It's like Anno had an idea of what he wanted it to feel like then lost that idea then found it again for the last 10 episodes

It's not about how ethically wrong their actions are but about how insufferable the members behave. The ability to empathize with someone doesn't mean that you're willing to swallow their behavior. Of the character in Evangelion simply behave like worthless cunts for 24-25 episodes straight. As far as I am concerned, I imagine Anno suffering from physical pain after his fanbase turned these same creatures into waifus.

They aren't. They only come off as even worse because of Tomino's retarded dialgue. Almost every single character in his shows comes off as a complete spazz because of it, even in G-Reco and Gainer. Most lines Bellri utters make you wonder whether or not he's currently suffering from a seizure. Then you remember who's directing.

Poorly and autistically written dialogue are not the same as consciously portrayed character behavior. Someone talking like a retard is not the same as someone behaving like one in a private setting. Amuro might be a whiney little cunt in 0079, but Shinji reached an entirely different level. No Gundam ever put that much focus on the characters insecurities, either, so I don't see why you'd even be comparing the shows. Evangelion characters are more annoying by proxy because it's the shows intent to emphasize human flaws and it spends a lot of its times showing you just how flawed and worthless these character act outside of the their pseudo military base.

I'm not saying EVA is for everyone, but there's a lot of room for personal taste here. Personally, just about every problem you listed is a highlight for me. There is no one perfect formula for an anime.
