Misato is very specifically older than a good majority of the target audience when it came out. People like cake now, but she was incredibly fucked up, and being just short of 30, that's not really something people think they can "fix" compared to young teens.

The primary flaw with the new translation is how mild and robotic it is. People use unusual wording and pronunciations (e.g., calling Shinji the 3rd children) and nobody bats an eye at how weird it it, making the cast inhuman. On the emotional front a character would say the most lukewarm comment, but Misato or somebody would respond in a completely disproportionate manner seemingly out of nowhere. There are no strong emotions in the dialogue here -- they can't even say the word "love". It's obvious they went for an overly literal interpretation of the Japanese, which is very vague and context-based language. When you do the same in English it loses all emotion and feels flaccid. I think that's the best way to describe the new script: flaccid. Nobody in fiction or even real life is this fucking boring.

Why would I be forced to use the new sub track? I think it’s a great track for a second viewing to get more in depth with the meaning of some scenes, but as an experience i’ll just stick with the more flexible subs.

That's what happens when people forget that "localization" is more than just "translation"
Cultural references have to be redone, and the grammar and syntax of conversations has to be changed to not seem stilted and awkward in its flow. One of the reasons I will opt for dubs if it's not a really bad dub, is because subs are often more literal and would flow awkwardly if you actually said the dialogue audibly instead of just read it. When the audio is English, the awkwardness of the dialogue becomes more apparent so they change it to make it seem more natural. I'm flexible about dub vs sub. If the dub has some effort in it, and I'm not particularly attached to associating a particular seiyuu with a character, I'll watch a dub. But if It's like I watched it subbed initially and got used to a character's voice being the Japanese actor I'll continue watching sub because I can't get over the character's voice not being what I associate them with, or if the dub is flat and lazy.
If they have a grandma voicing an adult man, It has to be dub. I tried Dragon Ball Super sub... I could not do it.
