Taking into account all the scenes with Kowaru and the abruptness of this line, you can still infer the same homo subtext as you can in the original sub.
The line being more accurately translated in spite of a more direct paraphasing actually feels nice with knowledge of the original sub because without the sub, Japanese viewers are met with the same feeling about how to unpack the word "suki" based on context of scene and their relationship

I am halfway through the series and I think the translation was very well done.

IMO, if you look at the Angels as a hivemind, then Kaworu was the Angel's final weapon against mankind that targeted the most powerful weapon that mankind has against the angels, their best Eva pilot: Shinji.
The angels had escalated their attacks against the Eva pilot, going past just physical attacks and into psychological attacks. They had mindmelded with Shinji and the other pilots before and were able to identify their psychological weaknesses. They then were able to take Asuka and Rei off the board, and then teamed up with Seele in order to send their targeted attack to take out Shinji.

I think people seem to concentrate too much on this specific love/like line as if it alone completely dispells any possibility of romantic/sexual attraction between Kaworu/Shinji. Out of context the difference seems huge but it's not like the other scenes with intimate tension between them are erased. Even the 'like' can be interpreted as more than platonic in this situation. Again, I don't think it's the better option it's just really not as huge of a deal to me as people seem to make out of it. It's like people complaining that Toji says 'congrats bro' in this translation.

Still no excuse for the 'grace' line however. It's one of several lines('lowest of the low', 'does she still make a fool of herself in bed' come to mind) that are a bit awkward as if they were not written by a proper native speaker.

That's how worse it is. "最低だ僕って saitei da bokutte" (I'm the saitei) is original japanese line. "Saitei(noun)" literally means "lowest" but it changes according to the context. For example, [I cheated my gf and my gf called me "saitei"]. This "saitei" means not "lowest" but "asshole or douchebag". Then what would you translate if 14yo school boy fapped to naked 14yo female friend of him and he called himself as "saitei" ? "I'm fucked up" is best line ever comes up.

Translation should always be made by a person who is native in the language they are translating TO not FROM and they also need to be living in the culture where the translation will be consumed currently and for the past several years at least.
