But he didn't reduce the damage from the explosion. The collars only exploded in mid-air, right after throwing them away. So either the explosion was entirely delayed or they were fast enough to throw the away before they even trigger.

Nobody has the mindset they are perfect. They all have been shown to have severe mental illness.

So far, the theory that best fits in my eyes is CoC messing with the collar somehow. We have seen extreme CoC crack objects and break stuff, so I wouldn't doubt that it had a physical effect on the collar to delay the explosion.
Still, it'd be fun to hear more theories.

One possibility could be that the technique relies on using the recent advanced form of haki to suppress the device's activation by, effectively, pushing back against it until its left contact with the user and then it activates normally. The whole technique requiring strong enough CoA to break the device, sufficiently advanced haki control to suppress the activation and enough speed to jettison the device before the activation overpowers the suppression and activates fully.

What he did in this case was rip them off with Armament, then infused the collars with Armament like one would a black blade so they don't explode. Then he tossed them aside and the haki dissipated resulting in an explosion.
