2019 NGE Netflix Dub

It's normal. I wouldn't read analysis by other people before rewatching it. Especially about characters and their interactions. It's more fun to just try to figure shit by yourself. You can read up on lore and plot elements though.

Whether their attraction to each other is romantic, a desire to be validated through others or a weird mix of both is up in the air and even if Anno himself said it was one of these most people wouldn't accept the answer since the characters are bigger than their creator at this point. Their relationship boils down to "I want to be loved but I don't want to get hurt so I'll just act like a sperg instead".

I completely understood all of that. The give and take you talk about I also get since it's illustrated by Asuka's constant pining over for Shinji in the ways of advancing on and sexualizing herself for him, and then him acting too autistic to reciprocate or show compassion to her and so she runs away calling him names to defend her bruised ego. Example being the kiss scene.

I get that the two are supposed to be the 'couple' of the show in a weird way. Towards the end when Rei is revealed as a clone, Shinji is understandably afraid of her/it and looks for support in Asuka since he is afraid of Rei. He is also apparently afraid of Misato but I'm not completely sure why. I'm assuming it is because she was '''trying''' to be a mother figure to Shinji and tried to comfort him with sex in Episode 23 or 24, don't remember which, which freaked him the fuck out. And so he seeks comfort in Asuka because despite the constant tug and pull between the two of them, Asuka being a dick to him forces him to stick up for himself in their interactions instead of just accepting what is said like he does with every other character.

Asuka obviously has some distinct feeling for Shinji at the start and then after he keeps giving her the cold shoulder during her advances, and especially after mind-rape, she begins to show more disdain for him than before. Also seems like Asuka see's a lot of her 'weak' traits in the personality of Shinji and projects that hatred towards those traits onto him, which explains why after Instrumentality, where I'm assuming she has learned that she can love herself, she is able to stop projecting that hatred towards Shinji and accept him with the face caress at the beach.

I have 100 more questions but that's what is on my mind now.

I've also been following Eva threads on Yea Forums for the past few days so some people's interpretations probably rubbed off on my way of thinking about these events.

asuka's perceived abandonment by two mothers also defines a lot of the way she approaches relationships, trying to ensure that she's the one in control of them and not in a position to be rejected or left hanging by them (like all her pretense around the kiss) and tries to violently reject & deny her own attachment to him and to the memory of her mother. so i think you're probably right about shinji's open seeking of affection and praise from people like his father being part of what she dislikes about him, though it isn't until she feels rejected by him that it boils over.

with misato its a little harder to pin down and i probably need to rewatch it too, but it kinda seemed like he felt betrayed in a selfish sense by her mothering act breaking down. to an extent shinji looks for his mother in his relationship with all three of the girls, or at least for that same kind of quiet accepting affectionate relationship that never puts him on the spot, never forces him to go outside of his comfort zone, ect, and misato kinda straddles the fence between being both mother and other (purple being between nonfamilial and sexualized asuka and familial and nonsexual rei) in a way that makes him uncomfortable even when things are good.

I also think I have a hard time grasping the full concept of the Hedgehog Dilemma because the few people I've been intimate with in terms of my feelings are literal lifelong friends and family that I have forged bonds with for over 15+ years, so we can be real with each other and not hurt ourselves in the process.

Despite being relatively wealthy and in great shape, I'm pretty much socially autistic so I've never developed intimacy with a member of the opposite gender nearly as close as I have with my bros so I've never really experienced the 'pushback' from the Hedgehog's Dilemma from intimacy. Or maybe that's just because I'm so much of a bitch that I'm afraid of forging those new intimate bonds with strangers because I'm afraid of experiencing rejection and my ego collapsing.

it's not just about interpersonal pushback but as i see it also about the way that becoming intimate or even just close to someone inherently opens you up to being hurt by them in a way that can't be separated from the experience of being an individual. the idea that suffering is an inseparable part of existence as a unique being is what shinji is trying to run away from and what seele are trying to 'fix' by going back into the cosmic womb of instrumentality (it always circles around to being unable to let go of the mother)

Im not seeing anything wrong in your considerations, but let me add one of my favorite detail about shinji that is exposed in EoE and episode 24 (If you dont want to read it and want to make your own considerations, feel free to skip):

Shinji wants to recieve love and be aided when he needs the most, but doesnt have the fortitude to help his friends in a moment of emotional need. Thats where he is cowardly.
Shinji seems to understand Rei is a clone of his mother (he think something like "Dad, what are you doing"), but instead of being emphatic and thinking "Rei must be going through a rough time, resurrecting and all, i should help her. Its still Rei", he is freaked out by Rei.
Shinji also grew estranged to Misato after the shit they went through in episodes 23 and 24. But instead of trying to put himself in her position and understanding how hard it must be for her too, he just cares for himself.
Thats why he "loves" kaworu. Because kaworu didnt ask ANYTHING in return. A relationship without any commitment by his part. Thats shinjis main character flaw.

In instrumentality, in the kitchen scene, he turns to his last friend he "still has", the only one he didnt become disenchanted yet: Asuka. He begs for her (actually he is begging for her since the start of EoE, in the hospital scene), because she is all he has left.
She, knowing the story went with Rei, Misato and Kaworu, refuses that one sided relationship. She recognizes he is only turning to her because she is his last option, and that he would abandon her in a moments notice if things went sour. She call him out on his bullshit, and it makes him break, makes him enraged, makes him despair, and full instrumentality begins.

He came on her, not in her. You need to learn how babies are made user.

If we are talking about 4.0 ending, shinji will likely have another chance to hit the correct hole this time, not the hole he makes with his hands

Yeah I was posting about Asuka and Shinji's relationship like 18 or so hours ago, not sure if it was night or not since I'm deployed in a middle east shithole right now and time zones are fucky.

I never read that deep into it but it makes a whole lotta sense. Gonna be rewatching it by myself this time to try and pick up on those little details and the nuance that I missed on this watch through, but I'm definetly going to keep that in mind.

Is it ambiguous as to if the Asuka in the kitchen is real Asuka's projection or the percieved projection in Shinji's mind? Because the scene immediately before it in the train seemed to have the real characters/personalities of the three girls which Shinji refused to acknowledge at the end when he called them all liarsbecause they didn't match his own perception of them in his mind. I'm also curious how those things are happening before Pre-Instrumentality/Pre-Third Impact. How is he talking to their 'real' characters if the only characters he knows are the one's he perceives in his mind and not the 'real' ones.

I in particular never bought the "fake projection" theories.
The only fakes in the entire series, for me, are the illusions who tang everyone just as instrumentality begin, and the the "fake asuka voices with different" pitches when she is getting mind raped that dont even show up in EoE.
I take everything said by every character in the introspection moments at face value. Makes things simpler and its the basis of MAKING A NARRATION.

Instrumentality doesnt respect time and space. Rei ghost took Ritsuko's soul before it should be possible. Asuka and Misato are dead by the time shinji got "caught" and started to have visions. Rei delivered the souls of Asuka and Misato to unit 01 / shinji / the black moon (or whatever was the catalyst of instrumentality), which allowed their souls to interact with shinji in a private "pre-instrumentality", before shinji tanged the entire world.

Its possible if Asuka got what she wanted she would either:
A. Continue to pretend the kiss was just because she was bored with no feelings behind it. She is happy on the inside, might even keep extorting kisses every now and then the same way, but won't let Shinji know it
B. If Shinji was really putting himself out there and she managed to recognize it, she may be willing to acknowledge him back that she was happy and likes having him around. I still don't think they'd jump to being a couple though.

Asuka, still feeling on top, wouldn't goad Shinji into taking the lead - which results in herself getting pulled into the angel's shadow.
And since Eva-02 can't really go berserk the same way 01 can, that could get Asuka killed.

shinji probably would've eventually passed her sync rate eventually anyway since he was more in tune with and opened up to the mom-bot anyway

Believe it or don't: Production for evangelion had its budget slashed due to the violence in 19, so 20-24 had to have a lot cut from them. And the original scripts for 25 and 26 were impossible to produce. So a new 25 and 26 made almost exclusively from old material was cobbled together.

Then, after eva's runaway success, the DC OVAs of 20-24 were produced and production started on taking the original scripts for 25 and 26 and expanding them into EoE. To make sure the most important scenes from the DC OVAS got seen by a public that maybe didnt buy them, these scenes were repackaged into death and rebirth.....

That's what happened and yet STILL its being reported that EoE was written AFTER TV 25 and 26 as Annos big FUCK YOU to a public that supposedly hated his "original" ending.

I personally hated the original dub and think its a terrible set of performances only liked for nostalgia's sake. Kid me hated all dubs, but as the industry has matured, truly great ones have arised, Death Note and Baccano being just two examples.
So I hope against hope that this new dub is handled by a director and performers that are: A. competent at their jobs and B. passionate about their subject.

Subs are not the best, some lines are not translated in fitting ways or are outright not the same. EoE iconic line was subbed as I’m the “lowest of the low.” It technically is a fitting translation but just does not fit the mood at all.

They weren't bad. The picture quality looked better than the previous release which had shaking frames and grainy visuals. The picture was crisp, clean, and the audio was fine. Saw nothing wrong with it.

Why go through the trouble of even paying all that money for the EXCLUSIVE worldwide legal rights to then just drop the dub people know and love, replace it with a newer worse dub that sounds like it was a rush job with unprofessional actors, mistranslate everything, change the episode titles, and remove iconic vital music?
