However the Eva dub was great, probably because they didn’t have any standard moe characters to voice and the German dub of adult characters is always at least decent. I guess as long as they offer the original Japanese dubs it's okay. I've run into a few foreign Netflix releases where they only offered some pretty terrible english dubs.

Not in regard to Netflix specifically, but the Godzilla releases are terrible about having only the bad English dubs and no options for Japanese. Even getting DVD releases in the original language, with English subtitles is a pain. Especially for some of my favorite entries, I'm a big fan of the 1984: Return of Godzilla - through the - 1995 Godzilla vs Destroya era and they are a resounding pain in my ass to find in the original language while also providing English subtitles. The Hesei period is my jam though.

I really hate the three CGI animated Godzilla things they did after Shin Godzilla. I enjoyed Shin Godzilla, but all we've gotten since is CGI cartoons and not even nice looking cartoon CGI. It's really disheartening.

Finished EOTV and EoE. It's been like 10 years since I watched Eva, and I only ever watched it before at age 15 so I didn't really get anything. I'm more confused about some of the character relations than the actual lore and events leading up to and including the third impact in EoE because I recognize a lot of it is supposed to be symbolic to convey themes rather than examined literally.

So first, the relation between Shinji and Asuka is obviously the focal point of relationships in Eva, at least to me. From the moment Asuka is introduced she's trying to sexualize herself in front of Shinji and get close to him, taking him into her Eva cockpit and trying to get his attention in the bikini. This continues for the wall of Jericho scene and their kiss, however, in these Asuka seems outwardly angry towards Shinji and then she shuts herself away. Later on we realize and actually see visually that when Asuka ran to the sink after the kiss and closed the slide door, she was actually sad and wanting Shinji to reciprocate or make a move, to show compassion and comfort her. Her jealousy over Rei spending time with Shinji, her realization during the Montage mid mind-rape, and the

So this all to setup my possible misunderstanding of EoE. It's obvious Asuka wants companionship, specifically from Shinji, but feels outwardly as though that is a weakness of hers. Shinji is attracted to Asuka undoubtedly, and in the kitchen scene in EoE continually asks for Asuka's help.

She then gets angry at him yelling and screaming that he will never understand her, while Shinji counters it's because Asuka never acts in a way to let him understand her. In a way, shouldn't Asuka be somewhat happy here since Shinji is opening up? Or is it she just seems him as a selfish boy begging her for help without being able to offer any support for her in turn, as he hates himself. Asuka too seems to have this back and forth with Shinji where she obviously wants to win the Shinjibowl but she also has clear disdain for him. I'm assuming this is because Asuka, at this point, still hates herself and sees her unconscious wants of companionship, love and emotional bonding as 'weak' in the eyes of her false-ego, and Shinji is the representation of all these 'weak' desires as he overtly tries to establish a real relationship with Asuka and rely on her for support.

The train scene vs kitchen scene in EoE also confuses me a little. In the train Rei, Misato and Asuka are basically giving Shinji an intervention. Shinji asks why they all are so mean to him in which they reply that they are actually being nice. Asuka even, in Shinji's moment if weakness, tells him she doesn't care about him waking off to her and just wants all of him. Yet Shinji calls them all liars. And then in the kitchen scene, as described above, Asuka is overtly hostile to Shinji.

I'm guessing the train was supposed to represent the 'true' Rei, Asuka and Misato which Shinji instinctively calls liars as their kinder attitude doesn't match the perceived Rei, Asuka and Misato in Shinji's mind. So was kitchen Asuka really 'true' Asuka or just Shinji's perceived Asuka?

Finally when all is said and done, when Shinji is strangling Asuka on the beach, Asuka shows signs of change and caresses Shinji. I take this as a sign of Asuka growing up and learning to love herself to some degree, and so Shinji is no longer a representation of the undesirable traits in her unconscious and she can accept him.

She defends her ego from her perceived by in turn pretending she thought it was disgusting and that she was just bored, etc.

When I rewatched it several years later I just noticed a lot more about her and really like her as a character. I still personally prefer Asuka slightly as a character and in a more 'waify' type of way. I find either fanboy camp shitting on the other character or the other fanboy camp really annoying and they usually are the reasons the occasional good threads go to shit.

I personally don't like Kaji's carefree attitude about his own life.
Sits around watering his melons when he could be killed in the crossfire of the Evas and the angel, and he basically just accepts he was going to die when the assassin was sent after him. Which really hurts Misato since he had also been trying to recover their relationship beforehand.
Kaji also ultimately failed since Misato learns everything way too late to make a difference.
