I would be fine with some focus extending to other girls for a little bit because they got so much for so long, especially Yuri who'd get shoehorned into chapters she had no real role in, but outside of the Asuka stuff none of this is particularly interesting.

I don't think that's it. The biggest jump in interest came around the Disneyland trip and the Kyoto trip so they probably think people want more story arcs and presumably arcs that fit neatly into a volume. Which is solid enough reasoning but this leads to, to borrow a phrase from Yea Forums comics, "writing for the trade" where you unnecessarily drag stuff out for the collected volume.

We don't need a volume's worth of detention chapters nor did we need a volume's worth of sports festival chapters. Disneyland needed it because it was a big story and, like Kyoto, basically set up the status quo and main cast for third year. That's something you make into a volume long arc. But the same can't be said for the sports festival or this which just leads to them dragging with fairly pointless chapters.

I'm happy with that chapter. Exceptionally happy. Definitely helped to see (almost) all the characters rather than being stuck with Yoshida and Mokocchi. I love both of them to pieces, but the cast is definitely the series' strength at this point.

Scene in the classroom where someone mentions Tomoko and everyone is like HMMM...? was fucking actually priceless. Asuka was adorable, I'm surprised we got her thoughts and even got her straight up being pleased about being not just contacted, but being pleased that she was the ONLY one. I feel a bit bad for her that Yuu got better treatment, but if I remember right she doesn't KNOW about Yuu, right? Nor does she know Yuu's relationship to Tomoko. I wonder if she'll confront Tomoko over that. I mean, she got that look, but in the past when she's gotten THAT look she's never done anything beyond looking terrifying.

I've always thought it felt like Komi got abruptly sidelined after the field trip arc. I guess the authors just got bored of her and decided they'd rather focus on the other characters. And I mean, I like the new cast way more and don't really give a shit about Komi at all, so I can't say I'm too upset over it. But they definitely did do Komi dirty.

A lot of her more one-note aspects are about gone. I actually like when she shows up now. It's too bad she's so dumb.

Yuu was a character created/suggested by Editor-san because they thought Tomoko should have at least one friend otherwise it would be way too depressing. It never really felt like Nico had much of an interest in her and she was fairly one note. Even Tomomote, which was theoretically about her, very quickly relegated her to third wheel in Tomoko/Komi-something shenanigans.

There's a somewhat interesting angle taken in the studying chapter where she feels like she's falling behind her friends (and probably thinks that means she'll be separated from them for good once everyone goes off to college) but there's really just no opportunities to include her.

Matters of Asuka are some of the few frequently serious matters in the series. I could see it not being a simple joke.

I THINK the joke that's cropping up more and more about Tomoki being gay is that he straight up knows two cute girls are after his dick, also has a yankee getting chummy with him, doesn't notice Katou's beauty in a hallway, and just plain doesn't seem to care about girls outside of that one time he tried to figure out what Komi was about because she's a fucking weirdo.

I still like the Tomoko-Komi banter.

Yeah Yuu's fine nowadays, yeah she could be more relevant but it's at least better than having her exist purely for the sake of making "dumb slut" jokes which is basically what happened to Komi. I do wish we could see her interact more with Tomoko's friends, her interactions with Yuri and Mako in that one chapter were legitimately nice.

At times it's great, but personally I prefer Komi's self-deprecation. Like that moment when she's alone with Yuu and they're talking about Tomoko, and she's like "lol yeah I don't have any friends : )" that was funny. Also Yuu accidentally suggesting that anyone who would tolerate being her friend would have to be a saint.

There's not really anything to indicate that he's gay though. More asexual which, growing up around Tomoko and having to deal with Komishit is probably enough to make him swear off of anything to do with girls because in his experience they're crazy and annoying.

If you are going to take the privilege of posting that from me, then at least do it right: the "RUN" should be in a new line and make sure to spoiler the picture! After all, Asuka wouldn't tolerate failure either...

It's not the ensemble cast that's the problem, it's Tomoko's character. The big joke surrounding Komi-something is that Tomoko was lonely and desperate for friends, and it was obvious to the reader that the two of them would get along. But Tomoko just refused to stop starting shit with Komi-something at every turn, even though Komi-something never did anything to deserve it. The joke stops working when Tomoko isn't desperate for friends anymore.

Even introducing her own friends changed absolutely nothing. In that sense, she's just a less interesting Uuchi.

I think Watamote was at its peak from the field trip through to Disneyland. I loved all the characters, the plots and interactions were meaningful, as far as I'm concerned, it was perfect.

You still get good stuff here and there, like the college trip and Nemo's flashback, but like I said, on the whole the characters have got more one-note, sticking to a gimmick while the plots don't seem either as funny or as touching.

I honestly thought Asuka was a great character at first, but until now I'd completely forgotten how good she used to be.

Yuri too. She used to be the most believable, human character to me, and they haven't really done much with her I can remember since they shared manga. These days she reminds me of the emotionless girl trope they made fun of in the earlier chapters.

To be fair, Nemo is already pretty close to Tomoko and unlike Yuri she seems more or less relatively secure in their friendship. She doesn't really have any reason to try and push their relationship since she already seems pretty much happy with the way things are right now. It isn't as though she's been relegated to a background role or anything, she's at least been consistently shown interacting with Tomoko and Yuri even if she hasn't really been directly in the spotlight in a long while. And her recent chapter with Yuri has me hoping that the authors will continue to develop her relationship with Yuri going forward, which I think is actually a much better direction for her character than just continuing to focus solely on her relationship with Tomoko. I do hope there's some long-term plan for her, at least, it'd suck if it really just ends up being the Yuri & Asuka show going forward.

Kaho is the one who has to deal with Asuka's deteriorating mental state regularly. Nice try yurishitter, you can't just equate dislike of Asuka with self-insert fags (ie mostly the fags that jumped onto the bandwagon because of the anime) to deflect legitimate criticism. I've been reading this manga since it began. Well, started around chapter 5. I like the direction the manga has taken like the inclusion of more introspective Tomoko moments in the series, especially the ones that tie into Imae-senpai's influence on Tomoko post-graduation. I also enjoy how Nico has focused on and developed peripheral characters like Yuri and Nemo but all this Asuka stuff doesn't interest me in the slightly and I dislike about the amount of focus Asuka should be getting. All the yuribait seems so hamfisted and Tomoko's recent interactions with Asuka haven't developed her character naturally in the same way as with Yuri, Nemo or even Ucchi. It all seems so artificial and out of place within the rest of the manga which is still pretty solid, although I think post trip second year was peak Watamote.
