No because you can always go back and watch 80s stuff.

I miss it until I watch a single OVA, realize I've already seen this artistic approach a dozen times before and move on to more versatile aesthetics. Can't say I dislike them, but I've gotten tired of them quite quickly.

No it makes me sleepy. Anything pre-2011 is literal garbage animation

pretty much this.

>LOOK MOM, I POSTED AGAIN!

Imagine being this much of a pleb

Yes because the nips are poor now and the higher ups are jewishesque cheap fucks so the animation is ugly as fuck even tho it’s clearer than ever

everything except character design

>tfw no more 5-tone-shading
This is why things look so clean and lacking finer detail in contemporary animation. Would love a show to go back to this stuff. Was hoping we'd see it with megalobox but alas, it was nto to be.

yes, am a mangaonly now because modern anime is nothing but soulless cashgrab

Zoomer here, can you recommend me some good ones? I'm a little bit of an edgelord, so preferably something relatively grounded in reality with a gritty urban setting without superpowers, just guns and weapons. Or anything, really. I want to experience the 80s.

>old examples are all from OVAs and movies while new are from 50+ episode TV shows
Really makes me think.

Old Scooby Doo doesn't look too terrible. Look at those dark backgrounds and clothing folds.

Overall, I agree the 80s did the future better than the 21st century.

80s shading was honest shading. Current shading is dishonest shading.

lol no that's boomer shit

Bubblegum Crisis, Iczer, Gall Force and Gunbuster.

or go ask /m/, they know this stuff!

VOTOMS is p good, there's an original series (but it's 50+ episodes long), two films (ties ot that long series) and a much more managable 12 episode series called " Armor Hunter Mellowlink" which IIRC is all on youtube.
>youtube.com/watch?v=e17ZtYpbQPE

I don't have to miss it because I regularly watch 80s anime.

Ahh yes, glorious 80s shading.

Don't forget glorious 90s shading.

because things haven't improved.

Where's the shading?

I wish there were more nipples.
I don't really see the point of drawing a character completely naked and just censoring the nips

I never grew up in the 80's so no I don't.

But I wish for anime art to get better.

I miss the 80-90 animation in general

I mean, which 80s aesthetic? The decade was pretty diverse, like all are. We can even take three splatterhouse ovas that came out the same year, like Overfiend, Devilman and Wicked City, and see that hey have radically different aesthetic senses, with Wicked City having a subdued and stiff hyper masculine neo-noir swagger, were Overfiend just looks gross and messy, while Devilman wear's its Oh Pro origins on its sleeve with an almost classical Ghibli esq simplicity and elegance, as the two companies constantly shared staff during that period. They all animate quite differently as well according to their general aesthetic. Wicked City hyper emphasizes Madhouse's Mushi Pro origins of highly stylized limited animation techniques spliced in with Kawajiri's smooth and deliberate motions and emphasis on well defined form. Overfiend often animates its characters in a playful and loose way, that doesn't even feel all that Kanada esq like you may expect from the period, but is more indicative of the next period of animation where everyone was blowing off steam and having fun after Nakamura exhausted everyone with Akira and Utsunomiya changed the game with Gosenzosama Banbanzai. Devilman maintains a notable shade of that classically convincing, but not totally photo realistic, sense of weight, momentum and interaction between objects that Otsuka would give us as far back as the 60s Toei films.

All of them definitely like to play with 80s styled bold high contrast color schemes in places and are somewhat stuck in a certain aesthetic sphere, but the unique artistic sense of the creators usually outshines merely being part of a decade.

Some major highlights of the era for me is Oshii's episodes of Twilight Q and Rintaro's Take the X Train, the latter for its delightfully ugly and pop art inspired insanity, full of neat little visual flourishes like speech bubbles popping up, and Oshii's episode of Twilight Q for its haunting experimentation with mixed media.

Thank you Patrick Bateman.

>the 80's didn't have a uniform set of styles
>psts literally 3 of the most stand-out anime of the era
might as well have thrown in angels egg lol, that's like saying the 90's wasn't very uniform because Lain exists....the exception is not the rule.

I miss the visual clarity and strong aesthetics of older, more carefully made anime.

You ever notice how all digital anime have grey skintones for all the characters? What the fuck is up with that anyway?

Recently watched Megazone 23 which is a really great little gem and the design of is incredible

I miss the good 80s anime, but keep in mind the average 80s anime was even more low-budget and trashy than 90% of the garbage that comes out today. Really overrated decade outside of a handful of movies/OVAs and Sunrise TV series.

>do you miss 80s aesthetic in anime, user?
I watch Bubblegum Crisis 2032 and a few similar several times a year, so I should answer "Yes".

JUDEEAAUUU

A set is not a singular. I'm not saying that every single anime looked totally different, just that there were a multitude of styles going on. Wicked City looks somewhat standard for a late 80s madhouse ova, especially a Kawajiri one, Gokuu and Running Man look the same. Devilman looks like the Ghbili works coming out around that time. And the fact that Overfiend's staff was obviously populated by a lot of Sunrise people who just came off of ZZ Gundam is pretty apparent just by looking at it, and Evil Dragon War Chronicles shared it's aesthetic for that reason, though Overfiend was the more well realized version. Kanada was the most important animator of the decade, but Birth looks and moves radically different from Legend of Lemnear. You can make a bit of a stronger case if you divide up the decade a bit - way more works were Kanada esq in the early and middle period, but from 87-89 not really. But even still, the string of Madhouse films from A Doorway to Summer in 81 onward were not at all Kanada esq, and they were one of the dominant forces of that era, and you already see the Akira brand of realism sneaking into mid 80s ovas that on the surface seem pretty Kanada esq thanks to the Anime R guys.

The 90s wasn't hyper uniform either, tons of those simplified Gosenzosama Banbanzai inspired designs and motion styles were all over the place between 90 and 95, and the heavily shaded and well detailed and tight lined style of Kite had stayed as common as it had since the late 80s, right in the middle of the decade both styles were just as common as the super deformed Saber Marionette style that was becomingmore common, etc.

00s anime wasn't all moe dominated either like some people assume, and not everything this decade looks like AI pictures cookie cutter shit. Anime is and always has been just as heterogeneous as it is homogeneous if you really dive in.

>versatile aesthetic
Which, doc?

Gentlemen, this is it. Yea Forums in it's purest form.

I like most aesthetics here. But it would be nice to find some of them in new works, not only in 80s.

Is this thread the ultimate proof that there are only seasonal newfags and kids on this board?

has there ever been a time when Yea Forums watched anime made before Evangelion besides Gainax shit?

No it's proof that people rightfully think the 80s were overrated as fuck and the only people who are still obsessed with it are 14 year olds that listen to synthwave and jerk off to Blade Runner.

>No it makes me sleepy. Anything pre-2011 is literal garbage animation
I don't believe you.

But I'll give a 2/10 because you got replies.

Sonoda is great but Bubblegum Crisis sucks even if his girls are still cute

During the day, yes.
Once most of the kids go to bed, things are much better.

So what do you like? The 70s?
> jerk off to Blade Runner
no shame in that

>literal garbage animation
I know this is bait, but how can you even say that when there was complex sakuga used for things you would get a shitty spinning 3d model for today. And even that only when you're lucky

Most of the people who praise the 80s as the undisputed GOAT decade are literal teenagers and 20 year olds who ironically don't watch much 80s anime, or just began watching 80s anime. I mean, it's great that younger people are going back and watching a lot of great shows from the period but it's created loads of pretentious pseudo-elitists who pretend to be from an era of anime they were never actually a part of. 70s and 90s were superior to the 80s and I'd even argue that there's a higher output of good anime from the 00s too.
The best part of the 80s was that the ceiling was higher, so the highest budget movies and OVAs from the period were legendary.

Attached: 87.jpg (1186x1200, 404K)

There's plenty of good 80s anime. My problem isn't with people liking 80s anime, it's with people only liking 80s anime and saying everything else is shit because they're obsessed with the aesthetic and their standards for animation have been skewed because all they watch are high budget 80s OVAs that are often trash at everything besides animation.

You know your shit! Very refreshing on Yea Forums
>it's great that younger people are going back and watching a lot of great shows from the period
that's not really happening. This or they aren't part of any big community

thank you. fucking quality posts.

Oh so very much.

hiro should make /m/ mecha & retro already

Bloodlust was better.
In story, direction, animation and art style.

What anime is that

I've seen more anime than you could ever dream of watching and as far as I am concerned the 80s are a jumbled mess whose only redeemable quality are its movies and shorts. Television shows and the vast majority of OVAs are fucking abysmal. Not even works like Birth are any good. They simply conceil their nature as irredeemable junk by performaning well in a single area, while everything else is on the level of amateurish tripe. You need to stop projecting, newfag.
