I agree with you to an extent but the craving for human compassion and empathy is a universal trait that literally is hard coded into every normal person excluding outliers with mental illness.

Just because she is going through puberty and not 100% on who or what it is she really wants, the human desire for empathy and connection with another human is obviously strong in her. In this case, the best person to fulfill that role is Shinji because of how similar they are in terms of their past and their trauma. Shinji may not be her true 'end game', but in the moment it's something she is pining for in hopes of fulfilling that desire.

The way i see it, Misato is the classic character who tries to drown her depression with vice. In her case, sex and alcohol. While she is a sex addict, she isnt a slut, and is faithful to Kaji. But she does it a lot, and drinks a lot, to forget the pain and bad memories of her life.

Her problem is that she cant (or dont know how to) be happy without abusing those.

So was EP 25 + 26 planned to turn out the way it did or was it literally because no budget? The no budget shot gets thrown out a lot but I just watched EP23-24 today and the animation in the fights and in general seemed perfectly respectable.

Anyways, this was setup from E8 when Kaji tried to set her up with Shinji. When she found out that Shinji actually is a good pilot from Kaji, she tries to show off to Shinji so he would notice her.

The rumor at the time was that the series was impacted mid-production when staff realized it was sounding too much like Aum. About a year later that comparison was the subject of staff interviews published as a book, and those contained Sadamoto and Tsurumaki describing a draft for episode 25 that would have shown events leading into instrumentality instead of confusingly starting already there. That draft for 25 is supposed to be what turned into the second half of D&R, and that became the first half of EoE after audiences complained about D&R being only half of a movie. So there were plans according to them, but maybe there wasn't enough budget left to make a good looking action heavy episode, or they didn't feel good about depicting a military raid one-sidedly gunning people down for television, or Anno wanted room to fit in more of the character studies instead.

Don't read it for that, then. It's not any expansion of an Eva universe and the personalities and backgrounds of the characters are all at least a little off from the show. I still think it's interesting for being by the character designer for the show, and a personal friend of the series creator, who spent time developing the original concept with him and painting the art for him to use to pitch it. Feels like he had different ideas for who these characters were supposed to be and wanted to assert that a little over the different direction the show took.

Well between the TV finale and EoE, that's quite a lot of hard-earned and fairly universal life lessons to chew on. The story manages to use just enough tragedy to illustrate its points, and doesn't just pile it on for tragedy's sake like a lot of recent anime (and writing in general, really). I can see now why this series is so respected nearly 25 years later. I look forward to binging Rebuild 1-4 next year and complaining about how they ruined it.

This is pretty silly because just because her character has a pretty bad idea of her sense of self doesn't mean that we as the viewers don't have an idea of her wants or motivations. We can pretty much infer this through her actions and dialogue.

Putting aside how little to do he wanted with his father to come back and fight was pretty good. Getting back in after Zeruel when the robot proved nobody had any more control over it than it decided they did, could melt him any time it wanted, and not thinking seriously about what he saw in there was closer to mentally ill.

Evangelion is one definitive proof that grand majority of human population can't even pretend to be in someone else's shoes. Idea of considering things from someone else's position doesn't simply sound alien to them - it's an impossible concept, on par with seeing colors your eyes can't actually register. Retake is one of the most famous Doujins on the planet, GoS is an alternate universe Visual Novel and Raising Projects/Angelic Days are a thing that can be argued is technically canon depending on your interpretation.

Second Try is a really good Post-3I/time travel fanfic (with some negligible writing issues). Re-TAKE is trash that only has any sort of popularity because it was one of the first Eva doujins uploaded online, I wouldn't recommend it.

Genocide is also a far better alternative to the Rebuilds.

Re-take is a dojin and has nothing to do with anything. GoS is a VN developed in house by Gainax, super non-canon but a halfway believable side story. The raising projects are raising sim games also developed by Gainax, but they're weird and dumb.
