Kotonoha obviously had the upper hand in their last conversation. While Sekai got emotional, Kotonoha always stayed cold, calm, and rational. We as viewers are given no reason to believe Kotonoha is lying at the end just because she's evil, while Sekai's emotional reactions and outbursts paint her as an unreliable narrator.

The first episode is absolutely supposed to be that way though. The entire fulcrum of the show is the subversion of the viewer's expectations, and the first episode does the legwork of establishing those expectations in the first place.

The MC sleeps with every girl that offers it, and the show gradually shifts tone from an outright romantic comedy to more serious drama to macabre gore-fest.

You couldn't even call it a tragedy since nearly all the characters show themselves to be shallow and unlikable. Not even at first, but over time. The plot tests their morals and they fail every time, normally in some romance someone would realize they screwed up and redeem themselves. The show teases this, but no one ever redeems themselves. They just keep making horrible decisions, and it's hilarious

What's mind-bending is that to the first-time viewer it's impossible to gauge the show's intent for the wild ride. The MC cheats on his girlfriend, and the BGM becomes romantic music. The show then treats the MC as a victim, as if getting caught in an affair is something that just happened to him.

The slow realization that everyone's mom in School Days was a thot from the company's previous dating sims, and the "impregnate everyone" endings were always the canon ones was kind of mind-blowing.
