I'm torn. On one hand this looks like a nice piece of art and it really feels like Mashima is getting into that space aesthetic. But on the other hand, it's fish. I saw enough of those in One Piece. If Mashima can draw that and not another dragon then I would be unimaginably impressed with the guy for stepping out of his comfort zone.

I'm pretty sure /m/ would say otherwise. If I recall correctly, the Gundam series has been nothing but giant robots fighting giant robots. I don't ever think I've heard of a gundam trying to stop an outer god-like entity before. I'm pretty sure Mashima can skip out on Eldritches if he wants to considering we already have the mystery of the Chronophages. But, if there isn't one or more good spaceship battle; Eden Zero would be a letdown and basically just Fairy Tail in Space .

The 00 movie, A Wakening of the Trailblazer has Gundams fighting an outer-god like entity that failed to comprehend humanity until humans managed to speak its language, but you are right, giant robots fighting giant robots has always been cool too. And a spaceship battle would be pretty damn cool too.

It has a more concrete goal from the get go, and the story is centered on pursuit of that goal. Shiki while powerful is a novice setting out into the larger world with little idea of what challenges he'll face.

People are much more comfortable with the story centering on Shiki moving towards searching for Mother than with Fairy Tail where Natsu had a goal of finding Igneel, but the story didn't center on his pursuit of that goal. Similarly they're more comfortable with Shiki being a n00b from a backwater world at the start, than with Natsu being an up and coming veteran wizard at the story of the story.

All the characters feel so different from Fairy Tail. Except Rebecca, she's still literally Lucy

I think it's leaning far more into Fairy Tail's anti-climax endings than anything. So far at least it doesn't feel like a reset button his hit at the end of each arc, so it has that more in common with Rave Master. With FT you could honestly shuffle "most" of the arcs around in any order and they'd still make about the same narrative sense. Right now I'd say the only big issue I've found is that EZ likes to info dump a lot of useless shit and talk about characters, then they serve little to no importance in the arc going forward.

Though he should keep it down to a decent level, that bit when the actual main villain took the heroine´s first kiss, remains as a painful ntr(when I didnt even know what ntr was) shock, no way in hell he could do that nowadays
