There are plenty of times where he fucks up pretty bad. Despite this, he's pretty much the only Saiyan who doesn't play with his enemies and just gets shit done.

It's not really an argument he has, but it is pretty shitty for Goku to have his fun with Cell, give him a senzu, then tell Gohan to finish it quickly.

The difference between the two is that Cell wasn't interested in blowing up the planet when he was kicking Goku's ass. He even says as much when Goku has to instant transmission away from the one he fires on the ground. Cell was much more obviously desperate when Gohan was fighting him. You have to wonder why Goku and the others didn't just jump Cell after he's down to his second form but I guess they were all too weak to kill him by then

Cell told him from the beginning that if no one beats him, he was going to blow the planet up. Goku knew that from the start. He just wanted to have his fun before he gave the dirty work to his son.

If Cell just wanted to blow the planet up, he could have done that literally any time he existed in the DB universe. He was after entertainment. The planet wasn't in any danger until Cell was losing. Goku knew he wasn't strong enough to beat Cell, but knew that Gohan was through his training in the time chamber. He gives Cell the sensu bean because he thinks Gohan is the same as him and Vegeta and would have wanted a fair fight. He hardly views it as "dirty work"
