It's very patchy. It has a few good things and an awful lot of awful things.

- The basic idea (unstable mutant race, horns, vectors).
- The opening titles (the director said they captured exactly the feel he wanted, but the show itself missed).
- The song.
- Occasional moments of genuine pathos. (I still feel sorry for Nana. I guess some people laugh at her. Different strokes.)
- The first ten minutes of E1.

>BAD THINGS
- They didn't have any other decent music so they over-used the song x100.
- The theme of 'innocence abused' could have been good, but the emotional exploitation was so crude and over-the-top that in the end the audience ends up angry/laughing/both.
- Kouta was infuriatingly spineless.
- The plot was appallingly clumsy. (e.g. the coincidence of Lucy being discovered by the same boy whose family she killed; the coincidence of their professor being the guy who knows about Diclonii, the constant "revelations" with no preparation or foreshadowing or logic, etc).
- Kouta's cousin lusting after him was lame harem-nonsense/wish-fulfillment at its worst.

I still believe that Elfen Lied was harmed by not having a second season. The ending to the first season really doesn't make sense and the cliffhanger is weak, so having the story continue along what the manga was doing would have given it a better closure even if the plot does get scatterbrained towards the end.

the ending kinda implies Lucy returned home after the battle to stay with Kouta [her mental condition might got wrecked by her losing her horns], still its somewhat good for her unlike the manga unless the main villain tries to search for them

So basically Lucy's dad sends in another kid and Duke Nukem to bring her and her sister back, but Lucy wrecks them and because of how badly he's doing their dad gets fired and has an attempt on his life. Duke Nukem survives and tries to take Lucy down on the beach, but she gets fucked, but he thinks he did a successful kamakazi and the one that pisses herself tells him he won and Lucy is dead out of his sight and he passes out with a smile. The organization eventually convinces Lucy to come back to talk. Turns out the guy in charge is also a mutant and has a son / clone that's the first male of Lucy's species, and he tells Lucy that they have to bang to start an entirely new race like Adam and Eve. She refuses and goes nutso. The Japanese police force gets involved because Lucy manifests a third personality and starts tearing her body apart using her powers while her arms start shredding everything. Lucy asks the protag to kill her, and he does. Years pass, protag has a daughter with his cousin and they name it Lucy, Duke Nukem didn't die and hooks up with the girl who pisses herself, Lucy's sister ends up reuniting with their now-homeless dad and they try to have a normal life.

It's kind of a product of it's time,the gore and edgyness along with the story appealed to edgy-teens.I was one of them and I truly enjoyed it, came for the gore stayed for the story.Haven't seen it/read it in 10+ years and probably if I did today much like everyone I would agree it's a mediocre gorefest with a nonsensical plot and story development but I don't want to ruin my nostalgic connection to it.The opening though is still one of a kind masterpiece that I have yet to see another anime top.

It gets a bit of an Evangelion treatment as one of the cult classics of it's time. I watched it and read manga. It wasn't bad, but nothing to write home about. While manga is more of a complete and detailed story, I actually liked anime slightly better, for the open ending, since it allowed me to enjoy fanfics build on that ending for at least some time. I wouldn't consider it waste of my time, even when I'm older and more jaded now.

I was expecting allusions to genocide and deep philosophical thoughts on what it means to be human instead i got a mutant girl who pretends to be retarded to hide with an incest family.

The anime did a decent job of tying it all up, but the thing with Lucy suddenly appearing was stupid and only ruined the mood. They clearly set it up to look like her going to her death; then they pull this stupid stunt (perhaps with an eye to Season 2?) basically saying to the audience "haha, we tricked you into feels, but we were lying, aren't you the suckers!?"

Okamoto Lynn's works are basically over the top edgy parodies of the currently popular genre. Elfen Lied was a parody of the Chobits/Love Hina-style harem, Brynhildr was a parody of battle harems and Parallel Paradise is a parody of isekai.

I felt bad for all the nameless officers, they even went out of their way to make sure the two that survived the first encounter got killed later in the series, with the last one getting killed in the final minutes of it.
