In a way, yes and no. It's funny, because after Gourry lost the Sword of Light, he felt he couldn't be Lina's guardian anymore. It was Lina's suggestion that they travel together until they found him a proper weapon. Eventually, they found the Blast Sword, to which Gourry asked, "Now what?" since their objective and reason for traveling together had been completed.

Ultimately he asked to see her hometown, leading to the end of Vol. 15, with Lina believing he wanted to ask her parents for permission to marry her.

1) If we're going to Lina's hometown, we're going to run in to Luna, who is magnitudes of power stronger than Lina, who no longer has the Demon Blood Talismans and can't cast Ragna Blade without a STATIONARY amplification circle, and the Eternal Queen, ruler of Zephalia, and a living aspect of Aqualord;
2) We know that Luna is equivalent in power to Xellos by Word of God, and we know Xellos is still burning copies of the Claire Bible, and we know that the Bibles are from Aqualord's own knowledge before his death;
3) We now have elves using copies of Bibles to construct Zanaffar, meaning the elves have Xellos' attention, meaning he's active along with both Dolphin and Zelas;
4) The elves are using magic that Lina has absolutely no grasp of by her own admission, and if they're active again we'll see more of it, and because of how new it is to humans and it's a foreign concept to Mazoku, it means Zel can potentially find a cure from them;
5) Since the Mazoku Lords are active thanks to the elves becoming active, Amelia has a reason to go to each kingdom as an Emissary of Saillune, which would mean eventually visiting the Eternal Queen in Zephilia.

Please don't complain. This isn't some DBS bullshit, this is actual world-building events coming together for good reason.

Look, I get it, I do. Slayers starts off with Lina killing a dragon, classic fantasy. Konosuba starts off with Kazuma pissing himself and a beautiful goddess incarnating him to another world where he'll form a party consisting of himself and only females.

At a glance, it has the worst trappings of Isekai. But Konosuba doesn't "develop" into a series with soul, from episode one it's made obvious that Aqua and Kazuma are not the typical isekai couple. You know what cinched it for me? Aqua getting fucking smashed drunk and then puking.

Don't mean to sound creepy or anything but it's touches like that that add soul - like how Lina got her period in Slayers and had to lay low for a bit.

Slayers has three (or four, depending on perspective) parallel continuities that essentially have the same path up until the end of what's called the Hellmaster Arc. In other words, the characters are like pieces on a chessboard; even though they're the same, how their "games" are played are different.

The first is the "core", which are the light novels, including the spin-off light novels Slayers Special and Slayers Smash. These are written directly by Hajime Kanzaka, the series' creator, and can be argued to be "pure" Slayers content. It focuses primarily on world-building and lore, as well as providing a large portion of backstory for all of the characters.

The next would be the anime, movies, and OVAs. The anime naturally has its own filler and plot-changes, and does some things better and worse than the light novels for it. While the anime doesn't really delve in to backstories, it really does shine in bringing the characters to life with their interactions, and even shipping.

The third is a hybrid of the video games and the manga stories. While the VGs are original plots, only some manga aren't adapted from the light novels. These are Medieval Mayhem, Knight of the Aqualord, Light-Magic, and Hourglass of Falces. The manga focuses much more strongly on fanservice and ecchi content, which is understandable because it's more of a visual medium that can be viewed in private.

I say all that to say, dabble in a bit of everything. You might be a die-hard Slayers fanatic and read and watch it all, or you might want to pick-and-choose what you want. (Good luck on the video games though lmao)

So, Umineko insight aside, what's really going on is that Lina and Pals are in the middle, usually opposing Mazoku, but also dealing with the "white" chess pieces as well.

And then of course sometimes a Jenga piece from Dark Star's universe will fall on the chess board and that'll set off the mouse trap, meaning everyone has to play their Uno cards that round or skip a turn

The Blast Sword is rumored to be the weapon of the dead god Flare Dragon Ceipheed, who used it to carve Ruby-Eye Shabranigdo into seven fragments. The weapon was lost to time. Apparently, at one point it had been discovered, but was too sharp to be used safely. It cuts through any material, even through its own scabbard, because of how sharp its edge is.

As for how it came into Gourry's possession, well... I'll let you read the light novels.

I believe volume 7 is the end of this series, I have the seventh volume but I can't for the life of me read it. I finally get what user was saying about not wanting the story to end, if I don't read it then maybe there is a possibility that it will go on. I know that isn't true but it's so fucking hard to accept it.

Gourry and Lina, in pursuit of a new magic sword so he can fight Mazoku, end up trying to earn one from a prince who collects magic weapons by doing favors for him. They end up in his magical armory fighting a chimera and a half-human / half-Mazoku hybrid. Gourry, needing a weapon to fight, ends up grabbing a magical weapon suitable enough for the job, and keeps it.

Later on, in particularly dangerous combat against a Mazoku Lord's general, his magic sword breaks... Only to reveal another sword inside of it. Turns out, it was the Blast Sword, which was encased in another, hollow, magic sword because, again, it wasn't safe on its own. Lina and Gourry have a dragon put a spell of DULLING on it, because of how sharp it is.

However, following Lina getting severely de-powered, they end up getting an elf to remove the dulling spell on the Blast Sword, restoring it back to its full power.

Gourry is probably the only person alive who can safely carry it at all times. Considering how much care he had with the Sword of Light, it's understandable that he would also be careful with the Blast Sword. Furthermore, he really needs to power-up. Without Lina being at the power level she was prior to Volume 16, she can't cast Ragna Blade properly, which her party was heavily-reliant upon to "cut through anything". With the Blast Sword having its proper edge, they can, theoretically, once again "cut through anything".

She was fighting a fragment of Shabranigdo. Unlike the last time she fought one, where she used a Giga Slave channeled into the Sword of Light, she had to find an alternative, since she knows the Giga Slave will result in her being possessed by the Lord of Nightmares, or worse. Her decision was to invoke the Dark Lords from other worlds -- Chaotic Blue, Dark Star, and Death Fog -- to defeat Shabranigdo, by bringing them into her world for a fraction of time by breaking the Talismans.

I know that Kanzaka's original concept for Amelia was for her to be taller than Lina, in that interview where he listed the heights of the main characters. But her height never came up in the novel text from what I remember, and Rui never drew her that way in the novel illustrations, and the anime followed his designs. So I prefer his idea of Amelia being the runt of the cast because it makes her cuter that way.

Back in (I want to say) 1999 he said that Amelia was 5'1", while Lina was only 4'10". In the light novels, Amelia is a few months older than Lina, and at that part of the story both of them would have been about 17 years-old. So, while theoretically Amelia could get a few more inches, she would've never broken the 5'6" mark.

I do agree though that she's cuter smaller. The breasts make her extra-sophisticated, though.

Being petite provides a nice contrast to her hulking daddy and amazon sister. So Amelia needs to stay a tiny shortstack and never grow taller.
In novel 16 Lina says that Amelia is slightly younger than she is. Her saying that Amelia was older when she was first introduced may have been her assumption at the time since she didn't know her well yet.

As for what I wrote here. This seems to be a case of Kanzaka retconning what he wrote before about Amelia's age, though it can be explained away in-universe as Lina not being sure about her age before. There was some discussion about this change on the Japanese internet at the time this chapter came out in Dragon Magazine, and the consensus was that Kanzaka was likely strongly influenced by the anime and that included its depiction of Amelia as being younger than Lina.
She does still call Lina "Lina" without an honorific though, unlike the anime where it's "Lina-san". So the age difference between them still isn't that much.

The question becomes, "How will Hajime handle de-powering the protagonist?" In other shounen, de-powering after using an insanely broken ability is resolved almost instantly, and said broken ability becomes part of the protagonist's arsenal. Lina doesn't have that luxury so far, since she's banned from Giga Slave, and now has almost no-access to Ragna Blade.

So, now we get to see whether or not Hajime's a hack fraud who'll fall into the trope trap.
