!! is objectively better in every way, but ! is still great on its own merits.

I think s2 has some slow/bad episodes while s1 is solid throughout.

Yamada Naoko did. the manga is mediocre to a T. but Yamada is the mastermind behind everything that made Keion so great. it's a shame because since the movie, she's never made anything even remotely as good. except maybe Tamako Love Story

If S2 suffers anywhere, it's in the Jun/Ui/Azusa trio not carrying scenes as well as the main cast. Still, I wouldn't call of any S2's episodes bad, and its slower pace is ultimately beneficial for what it seeks to do, both from a slice of life episodic standpoint and from something that slowly builds towards its emotional crescendos in episodes 20 and 24 (you really start to see this with episode 13).

I think with season 2 they paced it completely different and that threw some people (myself included) off.

Honestly didn't really like season 2 until that Mui episode and then literally every episode after that was peak season 1 again.
