Asuka (alongside the majority of GX cast) fell to irrelevance in the 3rd season and then only had the mini-arc about tag duels in the 4th.
Aki has the strongest start but even her starts to be forgotten after Dark Signers, also jobs a lot when her time comes.

Both are great duelists. However I think that Aki was better than Asuka, if only because at one point she duel alone and without a sense of mercy/pity. Plus Divine influence on her was also a thing.
Asuka is also a very good duelist, but consider that she was a strong student that also liked to duel for fun. Aki is the opposite, she mostly fight for "survival" and also a sense of superiority, at least until Yusei snap her out of that.

Maybe Yusaku has a fucking Ritual this week. Maybe Revolver flips fucking MIND CRUSH. You just don't know. You know who's gonna win, though. Nobody named Aoi or Blood Shepherd or Ghost Girl.

Asuka was touted as a really solid duelist but couldn't beat a kid that lucksacked his way through everything. Her victories in GX were handed to her and she's known as one of YGO's most dedicated jobbers. Arc-V tried to do her good but she died because even in another dimension you can't stop jobbing if it's your calling.
Aki has a worse record but it's nowhere near as padded as Asuka's. Also Aki has only one bad duel. Even the duels she loses are pretty entertaining.

I had this idea on how to make a female protag despite the game/anime being marketed to little boys:
Imagine a childhood friend pair, one surly dude like Shun and a genki girl lile Yuzu. The guy is a dueling prodigy and the girl is a bit more casual. Somehow the dudes soul is transferred into the girl and they are now sharing the girls body like Yuma and Astraln or Yugi and Atem did. So while the girl is the mc, the dude is always present and is the spiritual guide. He could even duel other souls from time to time.
