Anime has great animation and music, and expands upon the good stuff that the manga already does. The manga doesn't have anything as well-executed as Fafnir's speech about "hits and misses" or the season finale.

I think they both have their own charm. The anime is really comfy, colorful, and well animated. The story is more family-identity focused. The manga is a bit more willing to let characters be grumpy or negative (which I like). It pushes the TooruxKobayashi a lot harder and expands the cast by quite a bit. It's more focused on dragon-culture and character growth.

But Nichijou is the only other KyoAni anime that I like (not that I cared to watch a lot of them, anyway).
I just think they did a really good job with this one. COOL's a cool guy, but his output is a diamond in the rough more than anything. I do agree with the sentiment that some of the unique personality COOL's style adds to the characters was lost in translation to the more polished and consistent anime style, but, well, that's an adaptation for you, and the manga style does not really lend itself particularly well to being animated. It won't be the same thing as the manga. But the anime did add its own certain personality, and the manga wasn't erased from existence in the process, so I think it's fair.

I think COOL is just a fetishist in general.
That's just largely character design, but that's not all there is to style. Style is also panel composition, lineart, details (or intentional lack thereof), and a lot of other stuff. The roughness and rawness of COOL cannot be replicated by animation quite as easily without atleast changing something.
So, again, I understand why they decided to change things up for the maidragon anime, and it's not like the artstyle they ended up with was bad in any way.
