They change character designers a lot. It really goes from a somewhat kiddy look to the style you see in the OP, and then, in the Yamazaki half, it really shows an 80s vibe.

I'm still in the earlier half, I really need to get back into it. I didn't even know there were OVAs. I think the last episode I saw might've been when Ataru, Mendou, Shinobu, and Lum all get stuck in the cave on the camping trip.
The 70s/early 80s aesthetic works really well for Lum's design but something about it as a whole I don't love. I'd love to see Urusei Yatsura in the style of Shin Cutie Honey or Yu Yu Hakusho.

A long time ago I made it like 30-40 episodes in or so, I forget. All I remember is that all the episodes just became extremely same-y and not as funny. Compare that to Ranma which I've seen all of and while it does have ups and downs I never got bored with it. Is it just me? Should I give it another shot?

Rumiko generally wrote them as millionaires, but the anime went way more over the top with it - note that all the stuff about Mendo's army is anime-only - in the manga, he only had the bodyguards in suits. He only arrived at school in an helicopter for his first day in the manga, not some giant flying fortress jet like in the anime.
The only really out there things in the manga were the giant rocket Christmas tree and the giant cake.

2nd half goes back to adapt many chapters that were skipped by the first half... and often they were skipped because they weren't that good in the first place. I still like a lot of the original episodes and also adaptations of later manga chapters.
In fact, some episodes have pretty good anime original build up in the first part and then become rather mediocre once the anime original part ends and it goes to the manga story.
