Memes that are useless

This right here gets posted all the time. If a wall of text that provides depth and meaning to the development and of character interactions makes you feel like a manga is shit... Tough news but you are an unintellectual pleb. Just because you have to READ and THINK doesn't make something bad.

>Post memes Yea Forums uses that tries to shit on manga you like

Retard tier thinking in your picture with non-critical thinking processes.

>he doesn't comment Togashi for separating it into panels

I mean there's nothing wrong with this. But this type of detail is better suited as a novel rather than a visual medium like manga. This could even work for anime because it has a sound component, but this is just a bad look for what is supposed to be a manga.

Not only is this panel absolutely boring shit which didn't enrich the narrative and could've been condescended into under 100 words but this faggot didn't even get accurately asses the situation proving that the hunterfags praising this page is easliy impressed retards who feel smart for reading explanations.

Except you arent thinking at all bc the mangaka literally explains any everything so you dont have any critical thinking. I think the best part of manga is showing expressions and actions bc character actions and expressions always has meaning but in hxh it takes that away. Perfect example of telling and not showing. Togashi is a shit writer and mangaka.

Wow, you should write for him more often.

Oh-hoh, there's one. I haven't been on this board in months but not shocked to see the stock of barely intelligent posters hasn't changed. Someone post the cereal one that shit is informative.

Really? the hxhfags still think they are intelligent for liking anime and manga? Anime and manga is literally the shittiest medium we have in this day and age. Only 1% of anime and manga is actually good with decent writing, even then its still not as great as novels. The writing, characters, plot, story, themes, world building, fucking tone of novels have always been supreme to fucking anime and manga. Dont tell me you are an intellectual for liking a cartoon for children. When I read a manga, theres only one thing and one thing only they should do right, and thats SHOWING over telling. Its literally a fucking visual medium but Togashi cant even manage to do that. He is an incompetent retard. Also to answer your question, if you cant show a thought process, dont show it at all. Have a few scenes with a character, showing the movements of character to guess what they are doing next but togashi is a lazy fuck so of course he would cram that mess into one page.

Look, I'll be the first to tell you that no matter what, Togashi really got lazy with the no background. That said, the info is good for the drama so I let it go a while ago.

Gotcha my brother

>but this faggot didn't even get accurately asses the situation
That's intentional because his ability is a linchpin in Benjamin's counter guardian beast operations, and since Rihan by nature of his ability has to stay disconnected from the normal flow of information and make his own assumptions. What he thinks is important and if he makes a mistake not only is death pretty much guaranteed, but even if he doesn't die he's out of the game for 48 hours and that's a window Benjamin cannot afford.

Dude, you're being retarded. If you want to read walls of text thats what a BOOK is for. The entire point of a visual medium is for it to be VISUAL. You're the kind of guy that goes and orders a pizza at a steak house and say "lol, why doesn't everyone like this steak?".

Regardless, even in books, if you're a good writer you dont need to do an entire info dump. A good writer doesn't need to tell the audience directly, they can convey ideas without being direct.

This isn’t a pure picture book or normal book.
It can have more text if needed.

People expect every Manga to be Gon where it's completely without words even though I guarantee most posters who do the whole "it's a visual medium gais" haven't even heard of it.

please have mercy on us hunterchads

It's a graphic novel, for Christ. You can't tell the difference between an internal monologue, narration, or exposition because you equate long text with infodumps. You're turning "visual medium" into a meme.

>>graphic novel

Get a load of this faggot. It's a children comic at best you flamboyant faggot.

>implying internal monologue can't also serve as narration or exposition
>calling a shonen jump manga a graphic novel
wtf hunterchads are autistic that's not chad at all

It's a graphic novel, cocksucker. That's what all manga are, it's the nip equivalent. You're crying about words because it's cool to have a below average reading level.

no one said it was. if you are going to info dump in a manga, do it with pictures to go along with it. this is a good examplefor the panel that had vinegar in it, he couldve drawn a vinegar bottle. for the panel that panel that says "...heh" he couldve drawn him with a humble smirk. for the panel with home ec room, he coudlve drawn a door to the home ec room. things as simple as this togashi coudlve have done but hes a hopeless fool

Attached: 1528204829825.jpg (600x526, 159K)

>It's a graphic novel
>only graphics are two guy's faces and the rest is a wall of text

>calling a shonen jump manga a graphic novel
what does this mean?

Stop being obtuse. And for the record, I agree that there needs to be more illustrations

It's not the same you cockgobbler "Graphic Novels" are long standalone stories, comics are weekly or monthly.

And manga are just comics.

Again, you clearly don't read HxH or are aware of the context and why Togashi composed the page that way. specifically is the linchpin of Benjamin's counter-guardian beast strategy but his ability forces him into isolation as any intel he receives from others weakens his ability.

Much like Pakunoda in York Shin, he's the kind of character that becomes trapped in his own mind because so seeing that mindset is important because this is how you show his conflict. He wants to take down Halkenburg, and Tubeppa's GS isn't playing nice. He's now aware that people are bearing fruit from Kurapika's classes so he's both on guard since people can generate Hatsu at various speeds, and Kurapika is also a priority for him. And lastly he gives us new info on Predator to explain why it's not good against emitters or enhancers.

So This page does accomplish things like changing the narrative, and telling a captivating story. Rihan is a major character and if/when he jumps the gun or makes the wrong call. It will undoubtably come back to this page and his lack of patience in choosing a target. Remember he fucks himself for 48 hours if he doesn't get all the details exactly right. It's critical he make the best decision possible but he's not disconnected from the flow of information. That's his specific character drama and we're seeing it play out.

I thought that "you need a high IQ to understand Hunter x Hunter" was a meme, but if this thread is genuine then evidently there is truth to it. Based Godashi as usual.

Attached: 1461258930138.png (756x527, 207K)

So you are just stupid then.

>specifically is the linchpin of Benjamin's counter-guardian beast strategy
I said it first but I also agree with that user that the backgrounds being that sparse is completely unacceptable. Remember that not a dozen chapters ago we got Nasubi's rant but it had something in the background to make it more than just a wall of text on a blank canvas.

People who say there are too many words are being willfully retarded. But people insisting that Togashi didn't make a visually boring page are equally being retarded.

Attached: HxH_c362_p06.jpg (784x1145, 382K)

>why Togashi composed the page that way
Because he hates working and actually drawing things for a manga. That is what all the hiatuses show as well.

Hell, look at the Pakunoda page, it's got stuff going on to make the text not seem so bland. Even if it's just a blank black background and a closeup of Pakunoda's face that's probably from the earlier panel.

Attached: Hunter X Hunter v12-157.jpg (2037x3056, 1.06M)

Drawing weekly ruins your health alot and he was fat before.

>makes you feel like a manga is shit.
That's the thing OP, it doesn't make me feel like it's a manga but like it's a novel.
Pic related, the protagonist wrote less shit than togashi and was still called out by the editor.

Attached: This kills the huntard.png (782x1150, 397K)

Another retarded wall of text.

No, it isn't. Purposeful lack of illustration is a genuine technique in manga and that dates as far back as Nagai's Devilman. The history of use of manga techniques isn't confined to using cape-comic level composition for brainlets who can't think in the abstract. The panels are blank because it's an effective way to convey Rihan's mindset. Likewise, pic related was a fucking masterpiece of a scene (possibly the best of HxH) and it had no drawings. Funny how this one barely gets memed by brainlets; hmm, could it be that they are just afraid of words?

Attached: AAH NO PICTURES.jpg (1066x1600, 84K)

The words of editors aren't to be seen as sacrosanct. Many times, those same editors run stories into the ground because at the end of the day, it's about what more palatable to the audience to make more money.

And those hacks put out one of the shittiest flops in manga history (Platinum End) while Togashi is still selling 1M per volume.

Cope

>No, it isn't. Purposeful lack of illustration is a genuine technique in manga and that dates as far back as Nagai's Devilman
Yes and the page you posted is a good use of it. Rihan's is arguably not a good use of purposeful lack of detail and I don't think you've provided an adequate reason for why those pages should be blank in place of any minor illustration to make them more interesting to look at.

The page you posted is a good usage because the two character are literally in a darkened warehouse. Here's Welfin stressing out over Mereum showing up in front of him. Note how we get to see his face and his mood for the bottom two panels as well as the top one. This is more close to what Rihan should have gotten, maybe an image of an instance of Predator squaring off against someone with Ko active to demonstrate how it would look against an enhancer. The information on the page is great, the presentation doesn't match the context though as the first panel actually shows what Rihan is talking about and the rest are blank for no good reason.

Attached: Hunter X Hunter v30-042.jpg (2037x3056, 1.36M)

>Purposeful lack of illustration is a genuine technique in manga
The Heart

It's an example of great paneling. Rihan stares at Maor at the start of the page, beginning his train of thought, and then closes us into his deep thoughts. It perfectly captures the way in which the overwhelming situation makes Rihan unable to see anything and retreats into his mind to find the way out. We are trapped alone in the page with Rihan, unable to even "see" anything, and the page makes us feel like him. That's an advanced use of page composition that only a master like Togashi can pull off.

Based

The quality of platinum and the one of bakuman are unrelated.
Except that's not something this specific editor says but rather one of the rules of the manga medium. Not using images at all to explain something to the readers like Togashi did is lazy at best and amateurish at worst.

Cope

lmao youre actually a retard, i know the context because im on chapter 390 dumbass. All im saying is that hxh is a shitty manga but a good story, now off yourself

You sound like those faggots that praise modern art and modern art it's trash.

Bakuman was a 400k seller. No one cares about the "rules" from your shit and irrelevant manga, retard. Your opinion is worthless and HxH wil keep selling more than 1M per volume and the high IQ readers will still love it.

Attached: 1464910128877.jpg (400x400, 22K)

>It perfectly captures the way in which the overwhelming situation makes Rihan unable to see anything and retreats into his mind to find the way out
Once again, here are two pages of people trapped in their own thoughts. Notice how Togashi himself makes sure to dedicate a lot of page real estate to closeups of that person to emphasize this is their mental struggle. Blank pages alone don't do anything to convey Rihan's palpable stress or paranoia at a situation that's slipping out of his control. You could infer that from the text but it's a series of blank pages which isn't interesting to look at.

Rihan by comparison gets none of this and it is a reason why this page looks bad.

>but rather one of the rules of the manga medium.
I hate to play both sides of the field but there is no rule saying you cannot use a lot of exposition to explain a situation. Even in the page posted from Baku it states that the editor can be wrong. And this ties back into an earlier page where another editor mentions that as long as the manga is popular and selling whatever the writer is doing is working. That's the only real rule to manga, sell copies no matter what.

Wouldn't that just prove the idea that HxH is normalfag-tier?

Attached: 1560290454534.png (288x288, 124K)

I praise manga that understand advanced visual composition and aren't afraid to delve into the abstract; like HxH and Devilman. Drawings are not needed in every panel unless it's some cliche garbage for ADHD children and casuals.

Attached: Devilman-V3-164.jpg (780x1220, 149K)

>one of the rules of the manga medium
There aren't any, it's imaginary. You can literally do whatever the hell you want on the page as long as there's reason. From the perspective of a editor, anything that might ward off potential customers will cause concern. They are very risk-averse and they have to be to keep the magazine afloat.

This right here. This is Togashi's writing in a nutshell. A huge wall of text with no substance. This can be summed up in a few words.
>yOurE DUmb, mE sMArt

Rihan is trapped in his own thoughts on a metaphysical level due to his Hatsu. It's on a far greater level than what we saw with Pakunoda/Welfin; and the visual composition reflects that. The blank panels are a flawless conveyance of his trapped headspace, you were just expecting some obligatory close-ups that would add nothing in this context and got your expectations subverted. This is not the fault of the manga, but your own flawed understanding of Composition.

>Rihan is trapped in his own thoughts on a metaphysical level due to his Hatsu.
I agree, Togashi himself has made more interestingly composed pages to showcase characters who are heavily introspective about a specific moment. The Rihan page is the weakest one in the series.
>It's on a far greater level than what we saw with Pakunoda/Welfin
Not really, Pakunoda was dealing with the immediate capture of her leader, and Welfin was literally staring death in the face. Contrast to that Rihan is in a long-term operation that has great improtance to him don't get me wrong, but his life and leader aren't in immediate danger.
>and the visual composition reflects that
It reflects nothing because there is nothing there at all. The mereum/Komugi page having black backgrounds was appropriate given the context, I don't think Rihan having blank pages gets the same forgiveness.

Thankfully this isn't a school so we're not obligated to enable Togashi and instead can call him out for a shitty homework when we see it.

I think the main problem I have with this, aside from the extraneous text, is that it is a character I give literally no fucks about, who will likely be dead as soon as.Togashi finally gets off his duff.

"Graphic novel" is snob for non-strip comic.

It's a battle shonen, that automatically makes it normalfag tier.

>hate to play both sides of the field but there is no rule saying you cannot use a lot of exposition to explain a situation.
Just like there is no rules in painting saying that you can't paint with literal shit but it's still considered common sense to not do that and is an implicit rule. Using walls of text in a visual medium is not okay. Even novels try to avoid using this kind of exposition and would rather show it through events.

I mean, I enjoy HxH, but this is a pretty textbook example of how to do a manga terribly. Let's not delude ourselves on this like you're doing, OP.

>Using walls of text in a visual medium is not okay
Except when it is OK to do it. Hell, this arc is a mystery/thriller so getting information on what people think is a major part of the drama and tension. There is nothing wrong with a wall of text in a comic book, however there is something to be said about how to present it to the audience.

A lot of things said in those panels could be drawed, even as a background. This is just lazyness or being close to a deadline. At this oint might asell read a book.

I don't know, I'd say that Togashi is probably more degenerate than typical user here.

>implying I read anything but Seinen
>implying it isn’t the details that make the manga
Gay

>Hell, this arc is a mystery/thriller so getting information on what people think is a major part of the drama and tension.
Like you said there is a way to present information to the viewers and an exposition that long and that condensed definitely isn't one. It's especially important for thrillers/mystery who relies on the viewers/readers trying to figure shit out with the clues given to them.

>and an exposition that long and that condensed definitely isn't one
Nah, exposition isn't bad at all in this case. It's just presented in the most boring way possible. You could look at the page directly after that for a better example of composition as Togashi at least fills the backgrounds with alternating white and black backdrops for empty panels, and makes use of headshots to show shifts in perspective.

This page is also a good way of presenting information. It probably helps that instead of being a single person monologuing, it's broken up halfway through with a conversation leading into another monologue to show two sides of information warfare and allegiances. But if you check the english page for you also see how just a simple headshot and background really improve the page. You see how Zhang sees himself in the future, you get his head broken up into 3 panels which ends on a somewhat twisted grin demonstrating his own sick pleasure in his circumstances. Panel 5 is just him getting up but we get his hand on the chair, and the last panel is more monologue as well as a word bubble to indicate we're going to transition to a new place.

Rihan's page is giving us the necessary information for his character , setting up potential drama as he's making some leaps, coupled with the subsequent pages of Might pointing out that Rihan doesn't have a vital piece of information. It might be a bit too dense by about a single panel but that's probably a product of Rihan himself not being a major character so he shows up less and his stuff has to be front loaded more than someone like Kurapika or Benjamin who get more panel time.

I don't know how else to get some of this information across in a less compacted manner without asking for more pages to just spread things out a bit more. Each chapter is only 17 pages on average.

Attached: 13.jpg (784x1145, 318K)

>Gay
no u

>Nah, exposition isn't bad at all in this case. It's just presented in the most boring way possible
I'm getting mixed messages there. How is the presentation being presented in the most boring way possible not make the exposition bad?

>I don't know how else to get some of this information across in a less compacted manner without asking for more pages to just spread things out a bit more. Each chapter is only 17 pages on average.
Those are things authors have to think about before finishing to think about their stories. Togashi isn't the only who has to play around these restraints and Mangakas have to play around them. Many of them had to change them over and over to accomodate the format of the average chapter.

>How is the presentation being presented in the most boring way possible not make the exposition bad?
Because my argument is that all he needed to do was add some simple backgrounds as the text itself isn't the problem, just how blank the page looks which makes it look boring in isolation or even compared to other examples of wordy pages in this same series.

The exposition itself is what gets me drawn into this sub plot. Rihan isn't a major character in this arc but he's an important one to follow since his ability is narratively best suited to these long drawn out battles of wits and intrigue. I get the feeling from that page as well as the other I just posted that one of the things that is going to get Benjamin's men knocked off will be how much they are focusing on Halkenburg and his massive aura while other things happen right in front of them. We already know that Tubeppa isn't retarded and realizes she's next on the chopping block given the guard rotations.

Based and totally accurate. Can’t convince these uppity niggers to admit though.

Kek. Well done, son. I hate pretentious manga with bigh text walls.

But this page is showing that girl making a list to show us a point and that's the guy's a complete failure. Togashi is just writing a wall of text for a fucking internal monologue that never ends to pinpoint some meaningless idea he could put on paper with less words.

I'm not going to say that this satire isn't funny or deserved, it is.
However, I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed this page when it came out. I felt like it correctly portrayed the fact that Rihan (spelling?) is an overanalyzer and that the mission is so delicate that his mind is racing on its own due to the adrenaline, although he is a trained soldier that manages to subdue his body from reacting to it.

Attached: 1550958397780.gif (511x512, 105K)

>not using the potential of the medium good

Hxh is a shonen, cope

The page is clearly about rihan state of mind and how focused he is, we pass from seeing the full picture, to only see him and then to only see white.
Also, his ability is literally about analyzing things and comes as close as possible to the truth, so it makes sense too.
Also it's only one page, and what he thinks about is interesting too, so who cares.

Imagine being so asshurt over people joking about Togashi's laziness and the decline of HxH that you make an entire thread to bitch about it, user please, huntertards were already a joke across the board but this is pitiful.
