Just started watching this series. Got to episode 7 and the animation style took a big dip in quality. Decided to look into it and it turns out recent releases have redrawn certain episodes for some god damn reason. That being said, do you anons recommend I just deal with it, or is there any modern release or torrent with the un-fucked episodes?
There's a laserdisc rip on Nyaa that won't have any redrawn scenes but then even the non-redrawn stuff will be VHS quality. I'd say just deal with it. I noticed near the beginning some redrawn stuff will last a while but later on it's more evened out and doesn't happen as much.

Fuck, how many episodes are victimized by this shit? I mean who the fuck even thought it was a good idea? The only thing they could've made better is the actual animation, but they didn't change that at all. Just weakened the designs and completely fucked the color pallet.
If it gets better later then that's a relief. Shit was incredibly jarring at first.
Haven't watched LotGH but the only reason I can think of is that the original film for these scenes had been lost in some way so they had to either upscale or redraw them. And they chose the latter.

Kinda boring Prefer more “fun” space operas like Yamato

That's probably it but I would have probably preferred them just upscaling the stuff if they had to. The redrawing was done for the DVD release though iirc so it was quite a while ago and the upscaling probably wouldn't have been as bad for that compared to a bluray release.
I wonder if someone is ever going to go through and replace the digital redraws with footage from the laserdisc version. I imagine there should be someone that cares enough to do it.

Find the laserdisc version, where the episodes where unchanged. There used to be a torrent floating around.

Some important episodes are fucked by this, noticeably ep 26 (big stuff happens in ep 26 and it has that new style all throughout). Again, there used to be a subbed laserdisc torrent around. These changes were only present later in the DVDs. They aren't in HD (I think they're like 480p at worst) but if you want the original then look for those.

I know there's some parts that were clearly animated with some other technique, but it was pretty consistent throughout the show and it kept switching back to normal look. Post comparison shots, maybe?
Asher Brooks
For the DVD release they went back and digitally reanimated some scenes. I don't know if it was because those parts were lost and couldn't be scanned in higher quality or if they just felt those scenes were animated poorly originally or not. I feel like at least some of them were the latter. Pic related.
kek I like top better honestly because of the rainbow background

Is that a chocobo in Reinhardt's hair?
Nicholas Smith
Yeah, that. I noticed it and was kinda put off by the sterile look, but the drawings weren't bad so I guess I was able to deal with it okay.

If humanity could colonize planets, shouldn't there be limitless resources and therefore no reason for war?
Landon Thompson
no, there will be more humans to feed

Just search for Legend of the Galactic Heroes on nyaa. I'm watching the one that's the first season (ep1-26).
I'm only finding BD and unspecified rips on nyaa and tpb, outside of one LD torrent of the entire series with a whopping 1 (ONE) seeder. Guess I'll just try that for now.
The actual animation isn't particularly good in either the redraw or the original, but atleast the old art was really nice. The new stuff is generic and gets really disorienting when it keeps going back in forth in a single episode.
Cool, just be warned that ep 13 is corrupted in that torrent, but that shouldn't really matter just watch that one through whatever means you were watching the series before.
Austin White
Cool, thanks. Our the movies or any other materials worth watching or just the show?

My Conquest is the Sea of the Stars was made before the series and works as a prelude, so I recommend watching that if you haven't. Other than that Overture to a New war is a movie remake of episodes 1 and 2 that I believed was produced between seasons 1 and 2, and I recommend watching it as well. It's pretty much the same thing but animated better. I'm not familiar with any of the other spin offs or whatever else there is outside of the original series.
