I don't think it's that people stopped caring—it's just that Kitarou has always been a small-but-dedicated-fanbase sort of show, and most of those fans aren't running to Yea Forums to talk about it.

Maybe what I'm saying here is that PEOPLE still care about GeGeGe no Kitarou, but Yea Forumsnons don't.

I'd say the first Kitaro is very childlike even compared to seasons before 2018. A real smile is exceedingly rare in the source material though because his happy face is the carefree ( ´ 3\ )

They'd need new girls or giving very new looks to those two. I don't think just giving them more screentime would get much attention. This kind of thing always needs new material.

Maybe that's why Mana's friend has been getting more screentime lately? Although her design is fairly generic, so I'm not surprised no one cares.
