It is pretty much directly stolen from Eiji Yoshikawa's novel "Musashi". You might even call it cartoon adaptation of the novel.

I'd recommend you read the novel itself. It's better than the comic. It explains more about the characters, their motivations, the world around them and everything in general.

It's actually fairly easy to read (depending on the translation version) and a bit more realistic than the comic.

Wasn't exactly criticism. I just wasn't sure if it was a direct adaptation or "loosely based upon" or "shameless ripoff".
And I was too lazy to check it out.

So if the author says it out loud that it's direct adaptation, then that's ok. He's allowed to draw such an adaptation. Nothing wrong with that.

Still doesn't alter my point which was "read the book, it's better than the comic."

I personally haven't read the novel but the manga is already a masterpiece imo.
Even if the novel is better, Inoue's composition, layout and art add immensely to an already strong character story.

I might actually read the novel though since it is one of my favorite manga.
Are the translations any good? Cause I hate reading a good book that's reduced in quality because of shitty translations like what happened with the legend of the galactic heroes novels.

I loved it, one of my favorites.
I think one would enjoy the story more if one likes samurai themes and knows a bit about the period and Musashi himself - but not a requirement.

I read mine in Finnish.
Finnish translations are generally very good quality. Due to flexibility of our language to convey complex expressions in multiple ways and because the translator/language education in your universities is generally top notch.

Example: I heard that the witcher books got some international reward for "being superbly good translations" because they translated directly from Polish into Finnish. The end result is considered to be better than the English translations.

Musashi book might have got the same treatment.

It did finish, not in manga form though. Inoue did a museum exhibit containing the ending as a series of portraits.
