Sora no Woto

So just watched Sora no Woto to get my military moe fix and I really enjoyed it. Kind of gave me a Girls Last Tour vibe which was something I've been craving for a while. What did you all think of it? I don't see it discussed very often.

It's a bit of a cult classic, so it gets threads pretty often, especially for such an old series. Probably my personal favorite, too.

You could read the Nausicaa manga if you havent already, has a very similar atmosphere to SnW.

Its decent

Takemikazuchi is fucking moe.

Attached: タケミカヅチ.jpg (1200x767, 161K)

That's cuz it's a classic, most threads are about currently airing and waifus. This was one of my first shows and I always remember it fondly. Sora no Woto was the hook, Tamako Market was the sinker. I immediately planned my immigration to Japan

>especially for such an old series.

Time sure flies.

I wonder how many SnW bros made the trip to Cuenca in that time?

Would you do an Yea Forums sings?

Sora no woto has to be my favorite shows. The story catches you right off the bat to the point of anticipation for the next episode, the ambience for certain scenes were spot on and I really liked how upbeat some of the songs tracks were (kinda sounds like the music for its always sunny in philadelphia). I fucking cried and that is something foreign to me.

That would be fucking cool. The OP and ED are great.

>OP and ED
Nah, son, servante du feu is where it's at. Just think of all the burgers trying to make French sounds.

>Just think of all the burgers trying to make French sounds
y-yyeah those silly burgers, g-glad I'm not one of them. ahhh, question though, how would they be able to pronounce french sounds more clearly? asking for a friend.

Fucking footfags, I never even noticed her feet were in that picture.

Mamoru Kanbe should be the next Miyazaki, not Shinkai or Hosoda. He has the skill to do so if given the chance.

Kino, even the piss episode, especially the piss episode.

I JOE, YOU JOE.

Yea Forums is just about the only place that really loves this show, which is why no matter how shitty it gets it's still better than every other place by default.
First week of January every year user, tune in. And if you haven't tried Calvados do try to find a bottle, it's a brandy that is characterized by a strong apple aroma which makes it really unique and it's my favorite alcoholic drink.

The aliens.

The best scene was the one when she finally pees. It awakened something in me.

I think it's supposed to remain a bit of a mystery, it's more interesting that way.

I end up watching the whole thing, but it was boring and the animation was pretty bad at times, not to mention going all over the places with the mood.

Someone post Kanata with the "fuck k-on!" tee

So will the emperor now ignore Rio, or call her back later to produce a heir for the alliance?

I really do wish they spent more time on the world and its mysteries over the CGDCT aspect, it was the best part of the show.

I only watched the show because I saw her feet in the poster.

>existentialists
>a show about being literally reliant on divine grace

I'm glad that I saw the stream mentioned in a mogra thread otherwise it'd probably have been on my backlog for another few years.

Absolutely. For such a short book the author does an excellent job drawing you into the atmosphere - the melancholy and slow decay of passion for a goal/adventure that may never be. In some ways it's bittersweet too, despite being a satisfying read it can be a bit depressing if you reflect on your own life and draw parallels of seeing yourself wasting away too...

Did you miss the entire episode where Felicia talks about how even though their world is doomed to a slow meaningless death they should make the most out of their own stories?

It was purely political.

Which is incomplete and doesn't give Konata the strength she needs - Felicia isn't really doing that hot - until it clicks after the old woman's story, that we're not trying to build meaning, we're waiting on a promised return, even if it takes longer than we've got to live.

The episode 11 live stream thread was glorious
>SIXTY NIGGERS

How on earth do you get that from the Madame episode? It's supposed to show you what happens if you stop trying and just wait for whatever comes, because it's okay to wander, as long as you don't stop searching. And even if Filicia isn't very convincing at first, you can tell that in the context of the show she's 100% correct, because the good end happens only because everyone is able to do what they need to in the end.

Attached: Sora no Woto - Episode 10-00_13_33-00001.png (1920x1080, 1.43M)

sounds more like something they were saving for S2 that never got fully realized

>It's supposed to show you what happens if you stop trying and just wait for whatever comes, because it's okay to wander, as long as you don't stop searching.
I'm sorry, I'm trying to parse this sentence but it seems contradictory.

>the good end happens only because everyone is able to do what they need to in the end.
The good end was in-universe total BS, even with the magic spider tank they shouldn't have been able to stop the battle, the scene gets criticized for how nobody even dies (aside from maybe falling helmets) because from what's available at the setup it shouldn't have happened. Everyone heard and was touched by Konata's song because it was a miracle, a eucatastrophe. None of their efforts were enough to make a difference, but with all their efforts they were able to find grace.

What's contradictory about it? You can go on vacation in Seize and play your trumpet all day long, but sooner or later you gotta go marry the Emperor or you'll end up like the crazy lady who died in a snow bank.

>The good end was in-universe total BS
What, because you say so?

What made this anime so great Yea Forums? the innocence of the girls playing soldier?

It was the Haibane Renmei of the early 2010s.
It was also very niche as the show didn't sell that well and didn't gain any widespread exposure. I'm pretty sure only Yea Forums cares about it and for this long enough for it to be a tradition

>the show didn't sell that well
Oh, i must be curse then, this happens to every show i like, anyways i love how some episodes ha flashbacks to the past and how they never explained what happened to humanity besides "we fought and lost almost everyone on the world".

Attached: 1518285057636.jpg (687x613, 207K)

Best episode.

Attached: 1451068748653.jpg (1024x768, 89K)

Ah, I see, I was reading that sentence wrong. The crazy lady who died in a snowbank was doing absolutely everything she could, which was next to nothing but it was still everything she could offer. All Konata could offer was her song. Rio went ahead and did everything she could, which was quite a bit, but Konata went ahead and gave her song even though she had no idea what good could have come from it.

>What, because you say so?
Because teenage girls with trumpets don't stop firefights.

>It was the Haibane Renmei of the early 2010s.
No, and it does this show a disservice to say that. I went in with high expectations and was disappointed. Even though the show in itself is pretty good.

>teenage girls with trumpets don't stop firefights
Well, they usually don't drive around in spider tanks either, but let's keep things interesting, shall we?

And Kanata knew exactly what she was doing, because she knew Rio was coming, so she just had to stall for a few minutes. It really wasn't a miracle, that ending.

>she knew Rio was coming,
Where was there any indication of this?

Earlier in the same episode, Rio is blowing the call to retreat or something similar from somewhere far away, and Kanata's perfect pitch super ears are the only ones that can hear it.

In the show you didn't even fucking watch, apparently.

Attached: Sora no Woto - Episode 12-00_05_31-00001.png (1920x1080, 1.98M)

You OK?

That still doesn't make it a sure thing heist movie plan. It's literally a still small voice.

>a sure thing heist movie plan
Who said it was that?

>Kanata knew exactly what she was doing
excuse my hyperbole

I'm reading it right now, about halfway through. It's pretty good.

Well, Kanata certainly didn't know what she was doing. She thought playing the retreat call would work, and it didn't, and then she had to do whatever she could think of in the heat of the moment.

I won't, since you're making things confusing. Kanata knew she only had to buy some time (as did Filicia and everyone else) so she did whatever she could. It was a desperate attempt, but they were fresh out of options at that point. The only plan they ever had was to take Hopkins hostage and once that failed, they had to improvise. So yes, Kanata knew what she needed to do, but no, she didn't have a plan.

Right, she did all she could and grace picked up the slack.

That's just the name of the song, and the melody predates it anyway, there was no actual divine intervention involved.

Is there a name for the effect where something that's familiar and culturally near to you looks so much beautiful and melancholic when it's appropriated in a foreign culture?
Like Amazing Grace in Sora no oto, Scarborough Fair in Sukasuka, the Symphony from the new world in Shinsekai Yori etc
Of course the "remnant of a lost culture from a past time" is a big part of it, but Auld Lang Syne sounds so much more nostalgic when used in Japanese works too. Am I just reading too much into this?

Attached: Hiyorin cup.png (816x720, 290K)

Sure, I'll grant that, this song that's a major theme of the story was just a coincidence, the director just found a cool folk tune, sounds legit. What do you think divine intervention is like? Does there need to be angels with horns? Thunder from heaven? Maidens wrapping their arms around the beast?

My little war criminal can't be this cute.

I don't know what you're trying to say anymore, do you really believe the end scene is so unlikely it has to be interpreted as a miracle?

I'd just call it a new perspective.

It's called being a weeb

I'm not saying that its raw probability forces us analytically to declare it a miracle, no. I'm saying the themes of the show present it as such, from the story of the fire maidens at the beginning to the name of the tank.

>no mention of servante du feu
I'm disappointed Yea Forums.
youtube.com/watch?v=f0YKo8tx4x0

user...

its got the well-used laughing gif that got a lot of mileage here, and i think people will always be thankful for that.

No user, YOU disappoint me.

Oh well then, in that sense it's definitely a miracle, it's an angel from heavens saving lives with her magical golden horn, the symbolism is pretty clear.

But that's all it is, symbolism. It's a nice little parallel to the legend of the maidens, but I really don't think you can say that in the end they were saved by a miracle and nothing they did mattered. Those are two separate things, the "miracle" as part of the artistic message(?) and as part of the story.

So was the zombie ghost who talked to Felicia in the underground substation real or not? In fact, was there really magic in the setting?

She's just insane.

The magic was the PTSD we developed along the way.

>I really don't think you can say that in the end they were saved by a miracle and nothing they did mattered
I didn't say nothing they did mattered, I said nothing they have planned and done could have brought that result. Things were set up so they were brought right to the brink and saved. It wouldn't have worked if they hadn't done what they did, but that wasn't sufficient without grace. Does that make sense?

You can see the high school ghost in the background of a couple frames.

>ghost die with a "modern" rifle an some spare magazines
>just let them on the subway once she's rescue

>nothing they have planned and done could have brought that result
But they did plan and done those things and those things did bring that exact result. There was no grace required, it's all a perfectly logical sequence of events. They did need a bit of luck with their timing, but I don't think you can blame a writer for trying to create suspense.

We've come back to the same question again, "why?". You say they needed to rely on divine grace, but you don't offer any actual reason. What was it about the story that makes you think they couldn't have done it all on their own? Where does the grace actually come in?

>What was it about the story that makes you think they couldn't have done it all on their own?
There was nothing about the story that implied anything in their lives was in their control. The episode with the flood was about how not even the ground beneath their feet was solid. They were soldiers, subject to their superiors to the point Konata pisses herself trying to hew to the letter. When they had tried, in the past, they'd got Noel's fantastic coughy coughy bleed circus. Mankind and giant birds had destroyed the Earth and killed the oceans and the order of the world was pretty much that things wouldn't work and everyone would die.

It's not a story about becoming independent, or about forging your own way. It's about finding the one path through the darkness.

>a masterpiece
every fucking time. I refuse to read books with that on them.

>The episode with the flood was about how not even the ground beneath their feet was solid
Which you take as a metaphor? Isn't that a bit of a stretch?

>They were soldiers, subject to their superiors to the point Konata pisses herself trying to hew to the letter
Kanata enlisted of her own free will, and she didn't leave the phone out of a sense of duty rather than a direct order.

>When they had tried, in the past, they'd got Noel's fantastic coughy coughy bleed circus
That obviously wasn't by Noel's choice, she was manipulated into it.

>It's not a story about becoming independent, or about forging your own way. It's about finding the one path through the darkness.
Are you implying it's religious now? Because otherwise, finding a path that's already there doesn't seem to make much sense. You could argue Rio is trying to follow a path someone else set for her, but is Filicia taking her superior officer hostage part of the one true path? Is the impromptu trumpet concerto in the middle of a battlefield? They didn't get to the situation they were in by the end by following someone else.

And you still didn't actually answer the question of what exactly you think the grace was.

Sora no Woto is Haibane Renmei done right.

I don't blame you for doing what keeps working. Why, back in my day I could derail a thread by saying Chaos;Head was Lain done right.

>They were soldiers, subject to their superiors to the point Konata pisses herself trying to hew to the letter.
I'd say the author just has a weird fetish.

>And you still didn't actually answer the question of what exactly you think the grace was.
I'm struggling to find a way to express this that you'll acknowledge as an answer. The miracle was a constellation of coincidences that led them to that point and through it, starting possibly long before their lives. Filicia took her superior hostage because she was who she was because she'd been through what she'd been through, and if she'd been someone else that wouldn't have worked.
>Are you implying it's religious now?
Did the hymn not tip you off?
>she didn't leave the phone out of a sense of duty rather than a direct order.
Right, she thought that's what she was supposed to do and she bound herself to it. She submitted from her own free will.
>That obviously wasn't by Noel's choice, she was manipulated into it.
That's my point, she thought she was doing something good but something terrible came out of it. But something good came out of her becoming who she did, whether or not it outweighs the bad that came out.

Fucking hell, let's say trips confirm there is no free will and let's stop here because we're clearly not getting anywhere.

I'd say it's more like Naruto done in a way it doesn't resemble Naruto.

>he thinks divine foreordination can't coexist with free will
>he thinks materialism can
user, I'm really trying to work with you here. I see spiritual themes throughout SnW, not just as window dressing but as integral parts of the story. I can sort of see where you're coming from in this being a world where meaning has collapsed and it's up to the girls to make their own, but the story just doesn't give them the power to do that on their own terms.

I would compare it to The Godfather except having absolutely nothing to do with The Godfather plotwise or thematically in any way.

I mean, Kureha's entire subplot, that she puts her faith and trust in Klaus but it turns out that he's the wrong guy but that turns out OK since he's there to save her, I have no idea how to put that in an existentialist frame but there are stark and obvious religious connections.

>having absolutely nothing to do with The Godfather plotwise or thematically in any way.
It kinda does, though.
