Islam came to Central Asia in the early part of the 8th century as part of the Muslim conquest of the region. Before this Buddhism, Zoroastrianism and Tengrianism were in the mix, but not really after.

It's definitely set on the Eastern side of the Caspian which means Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan and maybe even a bit of Iran are major geological and cultural influences on the story.

93.1% of Turkmenistan's population is Muslim. 70% of Kazakhstan's population is Muslim. Historically those numbers would have been higher as far back as 644 during the peak of Islamic control in Central Asia, where religious freedom was not a choice.
