She's beautiful, cool, the Elder God-tier character archetype (kuudere), she's cute, innocent, fun to pick on, loyal, independent, smart/calm, respectable, tragic, kind, dorky, modest, the artist behind her is crazy about her, she's mother fucking King Arthur, she's badass, an empowering female character, charming, charismatic, confident, I could go on if I had all day. Takeuchi was a genius with her design. It should be no wonder why she's so popular. The only people who wouldn't understand why she is as popular as she is haven't read or even seen the Fate route, which has problems, but excels on fleshing out her tragic story and resolving her struggle.
Saber is only "dependent" on Shirou in title. Physically Shirou is the one dependent on Saber, while Saber is sort of dependent on his idealistic views which convince her to except her life and all its unique tragedies, much like he struggles to do. Without each other they wouldn't have been able to conquer the HGW and themselves.
They are my favorite couple because of this.
I think most people also recognize her as "the face of Fate" before they are introduced to her character and so some are hyped up by this, expecting her to be somehow perfect. Saber is only as good as her role in the VN, which is wonderful and endearing. She's just a nice design in all tertiary series, but only truly shines in the VN and specifically in the Fate route, though she's really charming and endearing in HF as well. Being exposed to her in any other route/story first (Zero, FGO, F/A) would leave a bad impression of her because her original character arc was written BEFORE she was as popular as she is now or when those stories were written.

It was in the OG VN that her character and personality was the most pure form of Saber that has ever existed. She wasn't shown to be very cute and Nasu himself said that he was worried about people not thinking she was a girl due to how he wrote her character. Realta Nua changed some things but she's essentially the same as the original 2004 VN and F/HA.
Lastly, I feel a lot of people are exposed to her fanart and promotional material which shows her to be a plucky, spunky, and cute blonde girl. However, most hardcore saberfags' main impression of her was and always has been something more along the lines of this (pic related) sprite from the VN. A calm, calculating, stoic, but still cute and charming girl. I'm pretty sure that a good 30% of her character sprites in the VN are something similar to this.

Well said. I also think that she's the "strong female character" archetype done right : she comes to terms with her humanity and womanhood without losing any dignity or becoming any weaker for it. If anything, she comes out stronger and more resolved in her beliefs after she meets a kindred soul like Shirou. It humanizes her in a way that many characters falling into that archetype never get characterized. She's a king before she is a woman, but she does not deny the latter aspect of her being for the sake of the former.

They didn't drop anything, they just failed to elaborate fully. She would destroy villages for the war efforts and send the refugees back to Camelot. I imagine thousands of troops take a huge toll on small village farms or something. Uprooting an entire village is traumatic and stressful on the villagers, especially during those heavily agricultural times. It was a sacrifice she would have had to make with a heavy heart.

I already read the VN, faggots, and Saber is still completely boring with no defining traits other than "autistic" and "cute", the former of which is because Nasu himself is autistic and can therefore only write autistic characters, and the latter isn't a personality at all but manages to be the only way people in-universe ever talk about Saber as well, aside from a couple of throwaway comments about other non-personalities like being majestic or beautiful.
And this is literally the point of the character, she literally lacked humanity to the point that her kingdom despised her despite objectively being a fantastic ruler. Thing is she's meant to grow out of that in the Fate route as part of her bonding with Shirou, except it never actually happens and she remains a boring fucking character right to the end of the entire VN.
Literally all anyone can ever say about Saber positively is "muh cute". She is the worst character in this entire franchise. It says a lot about the sickness of Japanese society that such a non-character became so astonishingly popular.
Anyway, Taiga best girl, but Fate isn't really for "best girls" anyway in my mind, I'd probably stick to actually good VNs like Muv-Luv or something for that.

I can do the same thing user with Saber. There's nothing interesting about Sumika. She's the run of the mill childhood friend who's in love with her childhood friend. That's all she has going for her. Saber actually is a character before meeting Shirou. She has ideals and goals. Her relationship with Shirou only builds on that as she learns to move on from regrets in life.
Like I said earlier I don't think you know the meaning of plot device. Sumika is single handily the reason Muv Luv Unlimited and Alternative happen. Saber plays a lesser effect on the plot aside from the route that focuses on her.
