Unless you're able to finish a chapter in two days easily, you'd be better off just aiming for the one. As long as it's not a weekly series, you'll catch up pretty quickly with that and people enjoy the regularity of getting a new chapter every xday. It'll also be good for your motivation.

It's not nearly as convenient for text stuff and it's not 100% compatible with the .psd files that everyone who uses PS uses. I use it for cleaning when I'm away from my main computer, but I really don't like doing typesetting with it anymore.

I want to start scanlating to L-R format. Where do I start?

Ideally, you'd want to do a page by page basis, but most of the time, pages from the same source and scanned the same way will have close enough to the same levels that a preset can be applied. Your pages will either be over, under, or leveled properly that way, but the margin of error isn't usually large enough to warrant doing them page by page. If you're starting out, I'd recommend doing it page by page just to get the feel of where values should be.

The key is staying persistent instead of thinking in terms of "I must learn Japanese in x amount of time". Start with the Core 2k/6k deck for vocab and Heisig for the Jouyou kanji. Follow his recommended approach of learning keywords before pronunciation. For grammar, I like "An Introduction To Japanese Grammar And Communication Strategies" by Senko K. Maynard but most people will recommend Genki and then Tobira because that's how colleges teach it.

So, all in all, if you put in half an hour every day you'll be decently proficient in 1-2 years.

Maybe if you had multiple cleaners and typesetters. Translation is super fast for people who are actually good, so it's doable as long as its not a super text heavy manga. But I think a few weeks is more realistic.

Anyone ever left a project because of QCers giving you mixed advice? I worked on one chapter, he told me to make the text bigger to make it easier to read. I did the next chapter and now he's telling me they're too big. I know this isn't a major deal but it's really making me just not want to work on this anymore. Any good QCer should have at least a basic understanding of everything you do anyway, so you can just ask him to show you what he wants it to look like and go off that.

It's weird to me when you hear of fan translators going legit. I'm sure it doesn't work that way but imagine going for a job interview and saying oh here's all this stolen anime and manga I translated see how good I am. Bizarre. I'd never be able to do that.

You don't do that, your skill is tested by you taking a translation test prepared by one of their translators. The dude interviewing you doesn't know nip anyway, showing him a bunch of shit you may as well have just reworded Google TLs of doesn't tell him anything.

Looking at the recent twitter drama, you should just research in advance whether the place you are aiming for accepts fan translation experience or not. Some strictly forbid it and will never work with you if they found out you had any hand in it, ever, regardless of how long ago that might have been. Some won't mind that it's a thing as long as you're not doing it anymore. Some may want you to list all of your translation work regardless of its legal status (JNC comes to mind).

Usually creds, experience, and translation tests are all taken into account.

I don't know how things are at big translation agencies (not all of them appear to be competent), but people dealing with Japanese media will likely have your test checked by someone good.

Good typesetting takes time and improves quality, and TLs already spend too much time TLing. I frequently typeset on my own but I do notice a difference when someone better suited to the role does it instead.

What I do usually beg for are cleaners/redrawers... It's not that I'm completely hopeless at photoshopping, but it takes ridiculous amount of time, and I'm not even remotely good.

Korean manga or simply manwha. But it's untrue, the ones that aren't there anymore are webtoon shit. The traditional ones are still there, untouched by the drama.

I don't pay attention to bubble shapes that much when picking fonts, but in cases where normal bolded font feels insufficient, I look through my font list and pick whatever feels fine, as long as you're consistent and not using 20 fonts for the same type of bubbles.

Yes, my point was that the guy interviewing you won't give a shit how many fansubs you say you've worked on and show him, since he doesn't know nip and can't tell if your translation is any good. He'll interview you, then you take the test, and then the test gets judged by someone that DOES know nip. At no point during the process will you ever get the opportunity to show someone your scanlations as "proof" of how good you are.

There is indeed some missing context, in the previous page the ghost told the girl that she can't do anything to the spirit itself (only the ghost can purify it), also the guy possessed is someone who she has a grudge against.

You get the same rough meaning in either translation, but there is a difference.

This isn't really the problem at its core
The core issue with sniping is "fuck off, there are so many other untranslated manga, we don't need people fighting over one". Sniping is primarily only justified when the group or person is too fucking slow, and even then you can't really call it sniping. That's just "picking up where losers stopped". Active sniping is basically starting petty shit out of nowhere and typically for not good reasons. Good reasons WOULD be
-You do a better job at cleaning or translating the manga
-You have higher quality scans of the manga
-You generally are less of a cunt than the current scanlator
But most sniping instances are "we can do it faster (and shittier), now give us donations"

So the super arms girl is actually also possessed by a ghost, her older brother. And the ghost just explained to her that when those possessed by ghosts kill people, they get their life force drained by the ghost. She's in the same situation, so the ghost is saying to her,

Easiest way is probably to compare textless with original and then translated versions on panda. The main issue would be finding many that use transparent bubbles, I suppose.

you can't, that's the point.

It's simple enough to generate a synthetic dataset by applying random text all over a page with bubbles and stuff, but synthetic datasets are characteristically weak, because the network will overfit to the eccentricities of the generator, so it should be avoided.

Ask redrawers to dump raw and clean pages for you somewhere. It's a pain in the ass to bulk produce those though.

I know one group that does. Their catalog is not extensive and redraws have been getting a bit more sparse over time, but they're still pretty good.

This. People put up with their two week delay out of laziness, they'll put up with a one or two day delay as someone applies their "original script" to some "raws" and uploads their version. There's no reason to do all the old chapters, just do this to nab the people who are keeping up with it. It'd piss them off way more than some random chapters anyway, since it'd actually cut into their bottom line.

I just realized that their delay on Mangadex for Solo Leveling is just a day yet it's still the most-read in Mangadex. I guess this will work since there's low quality leaks every week before Kakao's shit. So translate it from there, ready the script for TS, use JB's cleaned releases for that. Even then it's not necessary if you can release 3-5 hours after JB's (meaning you don't need to understand gook) because the Mangadex audience is used to a 1 day delay already.
