There's some theories on this based on his dialogue with Hatori in book 18 aka he was born with the curse but had a different view about it from get go, was not rejected by his parents so he didn't feel the necessity to urge for their affection, his family must be relatively wealthy (as shown by book 17 his parents were in a special Sohma gathering), he technically wasn't bullied or shunned because he was always sociable and surrounded by his friends. Tl;dr there was no reason for him to feel as terrible compared to the average Zodiac, because his own life was always relatively easy.

That's why say her character is a statement against the trans crusade cause her story is trying to show just how traumatic and damaging it is for a child to be transed and that transing isn't natural. Well seems like my opinion differs a lot from the nips, the only voice I don't think it's fitting's Hatori.
