Actual response: it does have a charm for fans of Fate, the original Fate/Stay Night especially. First season is also a genuinely cute and charming show. (Though a bit generic on account of being a parody of magical girl shows, so it hits on very similar notes) The writer ramped up the ecchi elements more from season 2 onwards, but it also explores some interesting and heartwarming character arcs. The series is also contains a fairly consistent amount of exciting action, in season 4 especially since that gets into the series' serious story plot the series has been leading up.

I'd compare it to Kodomo no Jikan somewhat, a show with a lolicon demographic and doesn't hide it, but can offer something more in its story and characters.

OK, just got out.

This is a great episode of Canrival Phantasm. Its a joke/troll episode of Illya Prisma and it was great. When I saw the PVs I wasn't expecting much but held onto the fact there might be 1 great fanservice scene. The only fan service is Luvias butler scrubbing Shinjis back and a gender swapped Julian.

Kirei KOs Irasviel, Rin, Livia, Kid Gilgamesh, Miyu and Taiga in that order.

Assassin Instal Shinji is the protagonist. We follow his crappy adventures throughout the movie. He's fucked up by Lancelot Sakura at the start, then he cleans Illyas house, becomes a servant of Luvia after some serious washing by her butler, becomes the school nurse, saves some tomatoes with Bassett and then helps Kirei before being fucked up by Sakura again.

We're treated to some what if crappy transformations with Illyas friends as if they has been orignally contacted by Ruby.

It ends in a big relay race for the grail, Illya and Ron vs Kuro, Miyu and Livia. Basset join in and keeps an assassin, berserker and saber alter that join the fight busy. Erica appears and Kirei attempts to harness her power before being imagine breaked by Illya.

It ends with a to be continued teaser of Illya vs Beatrice.

Again.... This has literally no fanservice but is legitimately funny. A big fanservice troll.

Considering the Dark Sakura eyecatch outright had text in the background making fun of her being left out, that's hardly the case. Also, there's no reason they couldn't add her to scenes like the one with the girls fighting over who gets to cuddle with the sleeping Shirou. It's true that the Tsukihime cast was hit pretty hard by the director's bias, though.

To be fair, Hiroyama has treated Sakura pretty poorly other than the Miyuverse flashback and that one extra chapter. In fairness, it should be expected there would be tension when they fully admit Sakura was chosen over Illya's route. It's a pin up mate. Through out the years they've had god knows how many different artists draw god knows how many different pin up posters for these cups with varying degrees of quality.

Obviously that's an extreme example, but don't pretend there haven't been stylistic changes in the anime art, as well as the art styles used in advertisement and merchandise. I do think it alligns more with general modern trends in animation and possibly trying to make the character designs look closer in line with the manga than some potential agenda at Kadokawa myself, but things are changing, and the changes are bad.

It's because the original character designer, Nozomi Ushijima, sort of just stopped working in the industry after Herz. The last thing the dude worked on was Amanchu and that was back in 2016 before 3rei came out.

Personally, I think they got too chained to the legacy of Carnival Phantasm by specifically referencing that golden series. So they shoehorned themselves into doing some really crazy parody scenario that would have worked if this was an actual series. Instead it was an anime original OVA in a series where the fans haven't seen the main three lolis animated together for literally three years.

Clearly they know that everyone loves the cups, they just overestimated how lenient some of the more hardcore fans would react to the Shinji surprise. Didn't help that all the PVs and even the main poster itself puts Illya, Miyu, and Kuro on the forefront.

Oh and that's not saying that everybody hated it. From what I've seen people still relatively enjoyed it just that the lack of screentime for the three cups leaves a bitter feeling in one's mouth. It's why the very first reviews that came out are from passionate otaku.
