Are magical girl shows still girly and marketed as Shojo? Or is it time for us to consider the three harbingers of the edgy mahou shoujo representative of the future for these shows. Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku, Mahou Shoujo Site, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica being the new dominate players for this small genre.

This is why Madoka will always be better than all magical girl series including Tutu and Utena which looks like a fourteen year old American was hired to do the character design.

Madoka was fine and I enjoyed it but it should be an outlier and not something that rest of the genre copies left and right. Not everything needs to be full of edgy violence and existential dread to be good. Madoka wasn't even as edgy as I was expecting it to be from what I'd heard about it before I watched it but apparently a lot of shows are going even further with the idea of cute girls in shitty situations.

It's pretty good. It is for younger audiences than some other stuff but it's really well made and I'm sure some of the stuff in it still needed to be censored by 4Kids. The chart above says there's shit like a miscarriage and suicide in the second season but I haven't gotten that far yet.
