I just don't like how smudgy everything looks, also there's really noticeable drops in animation quality. I'm usually not that much of a visuals-fag but KnJ has a mediocre-but-competent story yet I'm having a blast because of its great visuals and production, meanwhile Dororo has a way more interesting premise but it just feels so boring to watch at times

It's unfair to compare the two series just because they happen to be broadcasted in the same season and share some similarities. Dororo's world is not vibrant and eyecatching but it never meant to be like that. Unfortunately this show couldn't keep up with the quality of the first hald, still the show is not unwatchable and the story + characters are solid. Some episode directors were a mistake though.

But they also quite obviously shortened the fights in the first few episodes of this half, it was boring and the kishin didn't stood out. The first fighting scene I can say I genuinely enjoyed since the start of second cour was Hyakki vs Taho and the retainers in episode 18. From then on it only got better.

Yeah the way it cut between two different parts of the Nue while showing the crack and then both arms of the Asura glowing was meant to convey that Nue had both his arms. Since it was like a chimera and was basically multiple demons in one it makes sense it would have more than one body part. And because the Asura's eyes glowed after the Kyubi was defeated that means it got his eyes from that.

All versions, spin-offs and cameo appearances made during Tezuka's lifetime do the exact opposite. Not even Hyakkimaru would get away with saying Dororo was a girl without getting a mouthful or a beating.
What has been done with Tezuka's works after he died has no baring on his interpretation of his own characters. Blood Will Tell had their own derivative interpretation that was different and we'll soon see what MAPPAs interpretation amounts to. If MAPPA ends with a definitive Dororo is a girl ending than so be it for their version, but it doesn't change the original Tezuka characterization.

Japanese bows were fairly ineffective, shields were generally used to counter arrows. In japan, armor could protect most individuals within the the first 20 or so yards of the bow, so you only really needed to traverse about 30 yards while being concerned about being heavily wounded by a bow, not too bad when you consider the french had to worry about fatal wounds from over 170 yards away while dealing with english longbows.

Add to that that the Japanese preferred using two handed weapons, spears, and you have little to no interest in handheld shields.
