I can't take those two protagonists and their conflicts seriously. One was a Subaru-like MC that was too retarded to sympathize with. The other one was a waifu bait that was also stupid as hell (now being deaf makes you ridiculously stupid apparently), seeming more like a stereotype of shy girl than like an actual character with depth.
It was not like that in the manga, at least for the most part.
And then you also have that a lot of the bullies are simplified characters. They are hypocrites because the plot wants them to.

the biggest problem with FMAB is it's comedy, but well Japan. But it is definitely a classic, overhyped yeah but let's be real it's also understandable. The setting and it's narrative is perfect for a western audience.
FMA is responsible for a huge amount of manga readers because they were pissed of about how the show went after they ran out of source material.
The impact FMA and FMAB had outside of east Asia is immense.
In NA or EU polls (top 100 Anime) FMAB ends up on number one nearly every time and that is way so many Yea Forumsnons shit on it.

I don't disagree with anything you say but the point I made was that FMA and even later FMAB was/is the perfect anime to hit the western market and to show people who only ever watched Pokemon/Dragon Ball that anime has a lot to offer and is a legitimate media of story telling. Movie's tone and style is very jarring with its content. The MC was a selfish prick the entire time, but that clashes with the love story/moe that the movie revolves around. It's also full of people with varying degrees of mental issues, and many of these problems never go away, they're just swept under the rug by 'muh happy ending.' It's like somebody took Welcome to the NHK and pasted moe all over it which makes for a really confusing viewing experience.
