Sorry, misread your post. But if you have a key you might as well use it. Why not? I guess Grisha could have rigged it so that something would explode if it was forced open, but I don't know if he had that technology.
From a writer's perspective the key is nice as a way to symbolize the goal/mystery of the series. It also helped trigger some of Eren's memories when he saw it at one point.

Me too. He's like one of the few characters who don't look repulsive in the beginning of the manga. For example I don't like Eren's design in the beginning but now his appearance is one of the most beautiful. On the other hand Mikasa looked better in the beginning. Now she sometimes looks really cute but in general her appearance became uglier.
