The characters were kind of flat but Shinji's suffering was pretty real. It definitely could have been better but 2.0s ending and all of 3.0 was the only new content since EoE and it's probably really difficult to make a short movie like 3.0 and try to make it as good or better than the original series. 3.0 was never meant to be an ending and I'm willing to bet that 4.0's taking so long just because of 3.0's bad reception world wide and Anno's disappointment. I'd concede that 3.0 just wasn't as entertaining as 1.0, 2.0, or the original series/EoE but, 3.0 was more of a gut wrencher if you're looking at it all from Shinji's point of view. I kind of disliked 3.0 for a while too but after all these years it's kind of grown on me

In a sense. Neither her eva nor herself were needed for anything super important as far as big picture plans go. She was needed in the sense of firepower. Rei was also replaceable because clones. Eva 00 was not usable for a good portion of the series so as a combatant she was probably the least important. Plot-wise Rei was needed for Gendo's plan and the dummy plugs.

In a sense they were all replacable, though Asuka being the only normal pilot with a normal Evangelion was not needed for any endgame plans.

Rei could freely die since they had clone body backups, Shinji was meant to be replaced by Dummy Plug but Yui threw a wrench in it and forced Gendo to keep using Shinji.

Take a look at Asuka's breakdown scene. First I'll admit I'm not fond of her midwestern accent and unconvincing teenage voice. But in just 3 minutes they had made 2 noticable mistakes. First is how "Hi I'm Asuka..." is repeated with the same actor. That kind of defeats the whole "identifying oneself" vibe that was going on. Second is the "Do you love me?" part. In the dub it sounds explicitely like the little girl version is saying it. It makes sense narratively as Asuka would be asking if she loves herself, but it loses the nuance that the japanese dub seemed to have. The original was softer and more distinct from the sounds and voices of the introspection, which has sparked more debate on what those words really mean.

The "Hi I'm Asuka"s were pitched higher in the dub, and even if they weren't then these are both very minor complaints anyway. Both of these scenes get the exact same point across as they do in the sub (the first one in particular is rather blatant with Asuka screaming how THAT'S NOT ME).

I didn't want to bring up voice quality since people's opinions on this run the gamut, but I never understood the complaints behind this because Grant's Asuka sounds almost exactly like the JP version except it's less fucking annoying and shrill and she can actually speak German.

Sync up third impact in 25, 26 and EOE then work backwards, parts work parts definitely don't. We definitely see NERV being invaded, and some scenes from the first part of EOE, and it makes sense that parts of the scenes in third impact are the same or very similar, however, from there on there are drastic changes, more importantly, 25, 26, and EOE are thematically complete opposites.

It would be like trying to argue that 1.0 and 2.0 are happening concurrently with the original series. Yes, obviously some parts are the same, that doesn't make everything else the same as well.

I knew Rebuild was a disappointment right away when it ruined that whole sequence of not knowing how the fight ended, seeing the aftermath, people side-eyeing Shinji and Misato on eggshells around him, and him getting the flashback at the end of the awful thing Misato's trying to praise him for.

I mean the payoff and general establishing elements for the rest of the series is all great, and I do agree early Eva is quite good, it falls off in the late single digits to early-mid teens before ramping back up, but I wouldn't rank episode 2 alongside episodes like Asuka's mind rape, Zeruel, Sea of Dirac, etc.

The reason episode 2 is so good is because it's basically two episodes in one. It's not easily noticeable if you are familiar, but at first, since we don't know what happened in the fight and to shinji, it seems that Misato is just some wacky extroverted typical anime genki girl, trying to get closer to Shinji and simply feeling bad for how alone he is with his father. There's tons of comedy and Shinji acts all flustered and confused, it makes us assume that's just the kind of person he is, shy and reserved.

What's crucial is the bathroom scene. Misato says "Am I coming on too strong on him?" and as the audience we don't think much about it and we don't think much of Shinji saying "she's a nice person". Then we get the reveal of what truly happened: The Eva is going berserk, it acts completely unlike any robot to robot show, it's moving on its own, seems bloodthirsty, vicious and out of control. Shinji sees the eye of the Eva and screams in terror and trauma. Then Misato shows up and tells him he did a good job - what it does is suddenly change the meaning of every interaction between Misato and Shinji. Misato isn't a weird genki girl, she tried to be overly open and affectionate to counteract his trauma. Shinji isn't just reserved and shy, he feels oppressed, awkward and embarrassed at Misato's attempts to cheer him up. Now we understand that Misato was consciously acting that way out of pure empathy for him, not because she's a clutz, and Shinji was acting awkward because he didn't know how to react to her "acting". He's not just judging her as a good person because she's a genki girl, but because he realized she tried hard to make up for his experiences. Yet it's precisely because it's an act that it actually ends up alienating him from her. Just blew my mind at a recent rewatch.

I couldn't tell you, I just know it's one of the most impactful initial glimpses of the true nature of Eva that's not just recognized by the viewer but by the cast as well.

For example, at first glance her buying all that junkfood just makes her seem stupid and oblivious, when in actuality she was trying very hard to create, very quickly and suddenly, an atmosphere of familiarity to calm him down, manage him and help him deal with his trauma. but the way the episode plays with our expectations over what the substance of the social interactions are and completely flips it over with a mecha fight, seamlessly integrating them, was just great. Still think it even surpasses 24.

"Deus Ex Evangelion" was a fic with an interesting premise (Shinji gets absorbed into Eva-01 against Sachiel, Asuka is called to Japan as back-up to attempt piloting 01 and encounters a "ghost" Shinji) but didn't get very far.

Honestly in terms of long compete fics I can't really find any I enjoy as much as 2nd Try or Genocide. And those stories aren't even perfect, 2nd Try has writing issues while Genocide is solid at writing/characterization but I don't really love the actual story and events.

I think it was just because of the fact it was a movie, made it sort of harder to pull off than the episodic format where there's convienient spots to leave a cliffhanger instead of like, having a weird sort of skip in the middle of the fight. I've been re watching NGE everyday for the past week and change with one of my friends who has never seen it before. Been fun just chilling on the couch watching the 1080p Sephirotic BDs with him at a rate of 2 episodes per day to take in what we watched and interesting to see how foreshadowed a lot of events are. Once we finish NGE and EoE, we're gonna watch the Rebuilds. General opinion seems to say that 1.0 and 2.0 are okay, but 3.0 is balls to the wall stupid. Never seen them before so I hope its good.
It's interesting how every person I've ever watched NGE with for their first time, including myself, hated Asuka on the first run through and rates Rei > Asuka until you hit the 3/4 mark and her mental issues start coming to light, at which point you can look back and connect the dots to see she's has more character than just a bratty thot. Watching NGE with first timers is always fun.

Why is it that Eva always leaves me longing and sad more than any other anime after I finish NGE + EoE. I just want Shinji and Asuka to be happy ;^(

I think this scene is way more depressing than people make it out to be. Shinji was genuinely trying to kill Asuka and he was terrified of having to live with her for the rest of his life. I think his attitude is simply continuing on from the first choking scene. Asuka exposes his inadequacy, all of his flaws and confronts him with all of his abandonment fears because she wouldn't put on an act to comfort him like Misato or Rei does. He was genuinely trying to kill off a source of pain and suffering. I think it's extremely rare in ficition to have a main character enact violent in such a pathetic and selfish way, Shinji was in the mindset of an overworked father nagged on by his wife and children and who simply could not take the pain any longer, and he genuinely tried to kill her.

Being shown forgiveness and love in such a state broke him down as he made him realize what horrible thing he was doing.

I think the overall meaning of the scene and what we should be getting from is that real life, living with other people is complete hell. Like Tomino says, Eva says many ar won the verge of a mental breakdown if things go wrong. Rejecting instrumentality is not a cakewalk, living with other people is extremely scary and painful and we are vicious and horrible people trying to protect our self and wellbeing (AT field if you will). But Yui's statement still held true, as long as you live, there is a chance of happiness and the affection she showed in such a situation, the forgiveness and understanding nonetheless achieved makes life worth living. It's worth it to live a life that is pure hell.

Watching NGE for the 2nd time after not seeing it in 6-7 years, which was my first time view. Me and my bud just hit EP18 where Unit 01's dummy plug takes over for Shinji they can destroy the 13th Angel, Unit 03 with Toji as pilot.

My question is why did Gendo not suspend the dummy plug when Unit 03 was already completely destroyed, and even went so far as to collapse the entry plug of Unit 03 without interfering? Is it explained by the lore later in the show?

In all honesty I don't remember all that much from my first viewing besides the NUT scene and Asuka being best girl, and a bit of the character backgrounds. This is probably because I watched EVA when I was still an emotionally underdeveloped loser in high school that didn't catch all the significant character building, development and intentions on my first run through. Rewatching it now as a slightly more developed adult is basically watching a whole new anime because of all the subtlety and character motivations I didn't completely grasp all those years ago.

Arguably, either the dummy plug cant be easily stopped (like berserk mode), or gendo didnt want to take any chances (he is an asshole)

The target didn't go silent until afterward, they were still reading an angel on instruments all mauling long. Something attracted Eva-01 to the plug and inspired it to do that, and then headquarters stopped detecting an angel.
