They should be encouraging people to mirror their content across multiple sites. I remember seeing one that I think only allowed lower quality files on other sites and required accounts to download the chapter, I think to encourage making accounts on their own.

It seems that MangaDex planned to avoid being taken down and gain more content by going actually legit. They have a plan to hire their own tl teams, or hire specific teams that already exist, and work with the Japs directly.
JB opposes this along other scanlation teams because they feel that MangaDex is just taking advantage of them for future profit.

There's also the fear that MangaDex will go the way of Fakku and make users pay for everything while being very litigous.

Who in the fuck care about this, there's like other 10 places to read manga from, and Mangadex been working like shit for a while already.

Official translations have tons of issues too though. It sometimes seems like the people translating the series' don't even read them so you end up with phrases translated strangely because they were taken out of context, or I've even seen the genders of characters changed back and forth over a few volumes. And Viz releases at least are lower quality than the Japanese versions that they're localizing. Dorohedoro for instance is like this. But with scanlations at least you're not paying for them. It's worse if you pay $12 for a single volume of manga and it's trash.

When people were shilling Mangadex when it was first starting I went to a few series I was reading on both Kissmanga (which I don't use anymore because of the malware shit, though I don't know how true that is) and Mangadex and the resolution and quality were identical. I imagine some series are fucked up and that's where the stereotype comes from but it really varies. And Kissmanga allowed official digital releases while MD does not. I was reading Girls' Last Tour recently on MD and the scans there were trash but it was between that and the official digital release, which was easy to find to download.
