Replying to myself because I forgot, most isakai characters have nowhere to go. They arrive in their show at the peak and exist only to collect more pussy and jewels. Maybe they have to do the occasional training montage for 30 seconds every 10 episodes or so.
I find it refreshing for once to have a character that needs to grow emotionally instead of just acquiring new powers. If he ends the show/story the same as he started than we could maybe talk. But there is nothing intrinsically wrong with a character that starts out with a shitty personality.

The story is mostly focused on Subaru's personal growth and development. The themes and characterization are what are prioritized, and while that might be interesting to explore it would ruin the themes the author is going for. This even comes up in the next arc after the anime where he stops considering his own mental health and considers loops in terms of efficiency

Personally I'm more upset they didn't do the arcs character progression justice. Subaru started out as sort of likable in the anime when he was a nutter in the novels, you really got to see progress on his character and you feel a bit proud of him once it wraps around arc 3 to being not an absolute shitbag thanks to Rem. Lots of that magic is lost in its adaptation. Which is sad since Subaru in arcs 4-6 were absolutely based in the WN but I heard Kadowaka is going to ruin that in season 2 as well.
