The Yuri/Yaoi Genre is harmful to the LGBT community
When you look at the vast majority of Yaoi/Yuri work, they're terrible on an intellectual level both at portraying LGBT relationships and portraying healthy relationships in general. Take for instance one of the most highly regarded works of Yuri Anime, Kannazuki no Miko, and what we see in that. Rape being portrayed as an act of love that can be forgiven easily because it's *so pure*. The implication here is obviously both that rape isn't really rape if it's girl on girl, and that it's okay if it's done out of love.
Alternatively, let's look at the critically acclaimed Simoun. For those who don't know, Simoun takes place on a world where everyone is born female and at a certain age they go to a magic spring to choose their gender. Already you can see the implications of that in the Japanese view that homosexual relationships are just a phase that people grow out of as they mature. Additionally, out of all the relationships shown in the series, almost all of them begin with or involve some degree of sexual or domestic abuse, which is seen as a good thing. Again, another example of how the yuri/yaoi genre glorifies sexual assault so long as it's between the same sex.

While I can see your point, I must contend that these are older works and you'd be hard pressed to find a contemporary western portrayal of LGBT characters that was substantially positive in pop culture fictional. Further, casual portrayals of lesbian characters in anime helped me come to terms with my own sexuality. Even more recent works are problematic in their own ways, admittedly, but even flawed depictions are better than no depictions. Somewhere there's a woman who watched Nanoha, saw Nanoha and Fate raising Vivio, and that gave her the courage to come out of the closet and adopt a child with her girlfriend. That doesn't mean the whole don't commit to their relationship in canon isn't vexing, but it's better than nothing at all.
