It took me a second to realize what was actually wrong with this. Because the foreground characters don't look great, but they're sort of passable. But that army in the background, holy shit. They couldn't even put in shitty CGI of the MC's guys fighting the other army in the background. Are the MCs just fighting an entire army by themselves? That's more a case of bad composition than actual animation then, though the animation itself is still very bad.

Arslan was rife with this shit but at least they managed that much.

Don't really remember and I haven't watched much of Shippuden, but it always looked to me as a conscious decision, as in, made to look that way, to highlight the powerlevel or whatever. Pain moves so fast it distorts his face, the punch is so strong, he runs so fast etc etc (sure it looks comically when taken out of context, like here, like with the Road Runner).
The jarring thing is the abrupt change of style to fit these decisions AFAIR. The show didn't look like that except that part. Or whatever.

Pretty much. The thing about QUALITY and that specific episode of Naruto is that QUALITY usually arises from some combination of corner cutting due to budget or time, low quality outsourcing, and being more in the background where effort is expended less. But with Pain it was specifically because they brought in a director for that episode who was part of some particular internet indie animator boom that goes by a name I can't recall. They were largely known for doing very movement focused and emphasizing animation at the cost of on model art and clear looking characters. I'm pretty sure the guy went on to do that Birdy the Mighty OVA and Yozakura Quartet where the effect was the same but looked considerably less ridiculous.

This doesn't necessarily mean it looked good, but the point is more about it's not quite the same thing as most of this thread. That said, Naruto in particular did have a lot of inbetween-movement frames meant to emphasize that movement that people made fun of. There's a particular Sasuke one from where he's mid-fire breath and his neck is completely broken I don't have handily available that usually gets posted.

Why would I be satirical? Why do most people in this board not watch Josei anime or read Josei comics? Because they cannot emphasize with the characters.

I can relate to the characters in a well written martial arts manga far more than I ever could to a generic 'chosen one' story like Naruto, so it makes sense to read more Fighting Manga than consume Naruto media. This of course does not only apply to Naruto, a thousand other shows/comics could fit into that place.
It is also fun to see if the author knows their shit insofar as the techniques being used and the ideologies espoused.

I remember seeing a study which said that artificial sweeteners provoke the sense of hunger (something to do with the body getting ready to receive sugar and then receiving none) which results in you eating more on average and gaining weight. And I thought back to pretty much this exact thing happening to me when I used to have a lot of zero-sugar drinks, they used to make me hungry.
