Poor Toyama. When he does get brought up it's usually just to say "oh yeah, he's that gay guy who got raped by his dad". He seemed to me like a mirror of Ichise; both had unfortunate family situations, experienced sexual abuse and used violence to help them escape their shit but while Ichise was just a dumb brute Toyama used his brain to move up the ranks in the Organo. I really liked him, probably my favourite character in the middle arc.

Was he? Toyama was much more cunning and pragmatic, but I think those who dismiss Ichise as just a stupid brawler or an empty husk are mistaken. During the first part of the show, he essentially reacts to events, which makes him appear animalistic, but that quickly starts changing once he meets Doc and Onishi (and Ran, as he says himself in the last episode).

Maybe dumb's the wrong word but I thought the whole thing about Ichise was that he spent most of the show relying on his gut instincts and that it was only at the end when he decided he wanted to save Ran that he actually started thinking for himself. He only really followed Onishii out of loyalty because he saved his life and Doc because he believed that she put his mother's DNA in his texhnolyzed limbs. It's been a while since I watched the show though so my memory is a bit foggy, a rewatch is probably in order soon.
