I must confess: I judged, criticized, and dismissed Sakura as a character before reading her story in the VN. Now having read the VN, as a dedicated Saber fan, and having considered Sakura previously to be the "worst girl", I can tell you that Sakura is a much better character in the limelight than out of it. If Saber didn't get killed off early on she would have stolen the spotlight like she tends to do, so in a way I think having her removed from the story allows Sakura to actually shine. Out of the three girls Sakura is easily the most human of them. Now and forever I will always love and cherish my King. But I still must say:

Sakura is not one dimensional, and she really isn't submissive either but her situation made her made her meeker, and she was basically forced into not doing much by her situation. Not being able to do things because it could start a rampage and you want to avoid that is not being submissive.

She's a shy unconfident girl with immense amounts of self-hatred and bitterness due to her horrible situation, and yet she also has a fierce determination to endure it all, as well as being really kind-hearted and selfless. She's usually introverted and keeps to herself, but develops to become a lot more energetic and playful before the start of the story due to the influence of Taiga. That said, she's still very modest in comparison to the more generic action heroine personalities of Saber and Rin, and treasures daily life over risky goals. Unlike them, Sakura prefers to lie low and stay out of trouble, but for better or worse, Rin is the one person who brings out Sakura's inner competitiveness, as she simultaneously looks up to and loathes her big sister. Sakura has a bad habit of blaming herself for the faults of others and putting their happiness over her own, but simultaneously, if she's offered hope and happiness, she won't allow anyone to get in the way of it no matter what, as the two things she won't stand for are having the rug pulled out from under her and losing those she cares for. If she's somehow angered, Sakura's rage is cold and calculating, to the point of almost seeming gentle despite its ruthlessness. Even when not angry, Sakura sometimes displays gentle snark and teasing, similar to Tohsaka, but done in a more kind-hearted way.

And that's far from all there is to her.

Sakura knows the worst human beings are capable of because she has only dealt with people like Shinji and Zouken so she has a more cynical view of the world.

There's a scene I will never forget. It's when Sakura has already deteriorated a lot and she lost her sense of taste. She tries to cook for everyone and kicks anyone that tries to help out of the kitchen, and you just hear her break many dishes and take forever to make a meal, something completely unusual. When she finished it it looked good but tasted horribly, which gave you an even deeper realization of how much she had deteriorated right after giving you some hope.

It felt so human to see her try to do something she would usually do quite easily to try and fight off the thought of herself deteriorating and lie to herself, and it was also deeply haunting because everyone will lose their skills to a degree someday. It's fascinating to me how tidbits like this flesh out characters so much.

Based on what we see in the true end, I think their relationship isn't destructive, since they had each other during their lowest points and that gave them strength to keep going, which eventually worked out for them.

Sakura needed someone to love her and being removed from her abusive life for a long time to heal. Shirou found a more natural and realistic way to quell his seigi no mikata tendencies due to falling in love with someone he was incredibly close with already, and her situation. This is more or less why I think their romance helped them through their tough situations, and thus ultimately wasn't destructive to either of them. In the true end you can even see Sakura isn't jealous at all when Shirou blushes at Rin; she's more secure with herself and less dependent on Shirou.

Rather than limiting himself for Sakura, she made him realize what he's not willing to give up in pursuing his ideal. It already showed in UBW with Taiga, where he wasn't willing to let her die, but in HF it appeared in a way he couldn't escape from that. The way I see it, HF just made Shirou realize and accept his human limitations in pursuing his ideal. He still wants to help others, as shown by the night recon he and Rin do towards the end of the route, but he'll prioritize those he loves.

The way I see it, he weighed Sakura against his ideals and chose what he preferred, showing the limitations he has in following his ideal.

Really? I think the VN takes it as a given that people would understand why a guy who'd love a pretty girl he has a warm, couple-like relationship with. Their relationship isn't something that is born through conflict in the story, it's already setup and needs a confirmation, a push. And HF is about the depths of his feelings for her. There's obviously more to it than her being physically attractive, that just tells us Shirou would have sex with her like any healthy male would if not for x excuse.

What I mean is that Kohaku felt like more of a villain because she actually had a plan and carried it out; she was the mastermind behind the bad tings that happened. She was the big bad so to say. In Sakura's case, she's a villain for like 20% of the story, and even while she's supposedly the villain she murders 3 of the villains who actually had bad intentions and their plans were to wreak havoc throughout the whole story. She never felt like more of a villain than Zouken or Kirei.

Fuck me, in UBW Gilgamesh kidnaps a Matou ex-Master to turn them into a Grail Vessel, and Rin risks her life to rush in and save them. Imagine how much more sense that sequence would make if he'd just picked a different Matou ex-Master - Sakura's ALREADY a Grail Vessel, and Rin would ABSOLUTELY want to save her.
