Considering that Oda followed up on the seemingly irrelevant blurb of Sanji being from the North Blue hundreds of chapters later, I can actually see him addressing it this arc with the Zoan themed Yonko.

Lucci showed characteristics similar to Chopper's rumble ball when changed his Hybrid form's composition. One that favors speed while another favors power. Lucci is the strongest Zoan user we've seen go all out, so it begs the question if Guys like Drake, and the Calamities can shape their physique/characteristics in such a way.

Maybe Chopper's rumble balls are merely a way for him to speed up an evolutionary chain that was dormant in all Zoans, but needed years of training to achieve? I've always speculated Monster Point to be an awakening, so maybe that's it.

I think it's psychosomatic. Zoans don't change into animals, they change into an animal form. So they can do what the animal can do, which is why Kaku got away with all that bullshit - because that's how giraffes work, right? It would fit with how you ca pull any ridiculous bullshit you want with a paramecia as long as you can justify it, makes zoans less boring, and explains why Chopper's human form looked the way it did - humans have better understanding of how animals look and why, so when they change into their animal form, it's pretty close to the original (although who knows, maybe an actual animal of that species would be able to tell something is wrong), but Chopper, with his reindeer brain, had only a vague understanding of what a human is, so when he tried to turn into one, he ended up looking like bigfoot.

I think that Oda tried to make us empathize with them a little, by showing us Yasu guiding Zoro to Ebisu Town and having Komurasaki and Yasu’s daughter at the forefront of the Act, however I agree with you when you say that the characters feel rather bland, sincerely Hyogoro shares the same problems, but he is at least more flashed out, but with the pacing all over the place, with chapters showing too many POVs while they were introduced, their appearance in two or three panels hasn’t managed to leave a lasting impression.
