How much value do you put into visual directing?

Well?

Enough to know that HxH 2011 is the superior adaptation.

The only positive quality of that shit movie.

The use of colors in this adaptation is fucking disgusting
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING

Genuinely don't get the hate the movie gets.

I wouldn't say it gets hate. Most comments are even positive. You should be able to recognize it is not really a very good movie though.

>You should be able to recognize it is not really a very good movie though
And why is that? Because backstories and character motivations aren't built around exposition but subtle visual cues? Because it focuses on its themes and visual presentation rather than being an extensive plotfaggotry fest?

I am sorry that you are so negative and dishonest about that. The truth is that it has no integrity on either narrative or thematic level. I don't see why acknowledging that should be a big deal.

>How much value do you put into visual directing?
Zero

Weird cope.

Madhouse put the most effort into that arc though

Then why aren't you reading books instead?

Given that anime is a visual medium and a very fluid one at that then visual directing is one of the biggest parts of my experience. There is no reason for a high budget show to not take advantage of its medium.

>and a very fluid one at that
What did he mean by this?

Attached: 1539751336077.webm (854x480, 2.48M)

You don't see the massive T.Rex just off screen.

He probably means that it is flexible?

This is what I actually meant, that was poor phrasing on my part. I was refering to the fluidity of the medium, that you can do anything with it regardless of reality.

Watched this movie for the first time yesterday. It was surprised by how good it was but it could’ve been a lot more.

As long as it's not forced directing.

When does it start being forced?

Attached: 1558614565354.jpg (7200x5400, 3.27M)

When I start not liking it.

Hard to say since it's a matter of opinion and the director is the most important guy and decides literally everything that goes into an episode or movie, but I would say that it when every single second is artsy and tryhard. Luckily, japs know how to take things in moderation.

>The truth is that it has no integrity on either narrative or thematic level.
How so? Can you explain what themes or narratives it sets up to betray or ignore?

kys

>I would say that it when every single second is artsy
But why would this be forced? In stuff like Belladonna of Sadness or Utena or End of Evangelion, the consistency of the obscure and artsy is an integral part of their pacing and feel. Taking away from that is taking away from the specific perspective through which it chooses to articulate itself. You don't have to like its perspective, but being "artsy" is no less natural for those shows than bland conformity is for the average show.

Is this any good?

It's like when you watch a film with absolutely nothing going for it but composition and you just know it was created purely as an attempt to win the César Award or an Emmy.

It's decent. Any more than that would be overselling it.

>anime is a visual medium
Spotted the cancer
People like you unironically think good visuals = good anime

To see forced direction you just need to look at any post-2010 Kyoani drama. The visual presentation is so pompous and self-important considering the nature of the material (juvenile, poorly written teenage drama), that the disconnect ends up comical, if not annoying.

When user doesn't like it. See this moron here going as far as giving dates and genre.

Attached: 1551586882163.jpg (500x611, 64K)

But those are merely a few selected shots. 90% of the time Hyouka looks incredibly generic.

>It's like when you watch a film with absolutely nothing going for it but composition and you just know it was created purely as an attempt to win the César Award or an Emmy.
And these types of awards would be irrelevant to most of the stuff that would fall under every scene being "artsy", considering most of the older ones were distributed quietly across OVAs and film festivals, most of the ones that broke out on TV in the late 90s sold like shit and were lost to obscurity, and the newest generation of "artsy" projects are Webgen/ONAs/shorts which are a long, long way from being a prestigious field.

user is right thou. It's not only about visuals. Characters here discuss trivial things like who farted in the classroom with all imaginable seriousness like the fate of the world depends on it.

Blu-ray fucking never.

I don't mean literally. It should be obvious I was using western media as an example of what constitutes forced directing.

Sounds like something the director is forced to do because the source material demands it. Never read the Hyouka novels, though. So I wouldn't know.

Never say never. It's cel animated, so there's a chance.

Does anyone have a good grid of Disappearance?

The only KusoAnus work I ever tried to make a grid for was Liz, and I gave up after an hour because I couldn't find any interesting shots.

Attached: 1543711843114.jpg (3840x3600, 1.55M)

Should have been a movie.

What should they have filled the remaining 60 minutes with?

Attached: 1546200660138.jpg (4000x2160, 3.72M)

But it stands that most things that are "artsy" don't exist to gain prestige, they exist because that's the most fluid way they found to communicate themselves and didn't care if everyone "got it" or not. There's nothing forced about that.

Just making everything less incredibly rushed would have been enough.

This one's going in the backlog.

S-source?

This best be bait. Part of the title is literally written in English.

>forced directing
Please use a tripcode so I can block you

>HxH
>anything more than meh

Not a single interesting or impressive shot, sasuga Hosoda-sama. Post the Letter to Momo one if you’ve got it.

>Post the Letter to Momo one if you’ve got it
I don't remember there being one.

>Letter to Momo
God that movie is hideous. Okiura should stop pretending to be a director.

The only thing hideous here is your fat mother.

I could probably pick shots at random from it and it'd look better than the Hosoda shit.

This piece of trash being the first?

First rough version, taking pictures at 5 times speed so don't sue me. I really wish we'd get more hideous movies like this one.

So do I. Good job.

Hello, pseud-kun.

v2, other one felt too unbalanced after I looked at it again 40 minutes later.

I don't get why he shit's on Wofl Children like that, either. If nothing else, 2x4 is pretty great.

I think WC's character designs are so ugly that it's hard to appreciate any shot that features them, which a lot of the shots on that chart are doing, and since most of them have nothing else interesting going on in the frame then it's a tough sell. The bath shot is one exception that looks fine. Then you've got the several medium-long shots that are just characters (or a wolf) in the middle of the frame, with the rest empty and an unimpressive background. Fail to see anything noteworthy about it.
Generally fine with Hosoda's other films though.

Fair enough. Pic rel is still peak cuteness.

anyone have the one from a delinquent anime?

Attached: 1555015328756.jpg (2570x1392, 1.15M)

Best guess is you mean this, albeit it looks terrible. Show really doesn't lend itself too well for grids to be honest. Art also kinda got worse over time, I felt.

thanks you brother
