Honestly I don't know if any anime has made as strong imperssion as 12th episode of Katanagatari. Like all 11 episodes before were pretty chill with occasional "deep" talks, but mostly chill. Then this episode comes and boy does it keep you on your toes even if you know what will happen. It being 50 minutes probably helps too.

I have literally 40 best episodes ever and picking just one feels like I'm betraying the other 39, but this is the one I feel is least likely to show up in this thread. Beyond the fantastic rainy-day atmosphere, I absolutely love the way it explores perspective, perception, and parallax as the foundations of art AND as the basis for all fruitful human communication. The episode takes Nagisa from "weird bug girl" to incredibly admirable character by shifting the audience's perspective just a little bit, even as Sora experiences multiple nudges in her subjective view of reality that enrich her appreciation of the world around her. The whole show is about discovering the beauty of the world through your own mode of creative interpretation (be it sketching, painting, sculpture, photography, pun-based inventions, or hand muppets), and no single episode captures that better than episode 4.
